My hand rested gently on the knob, softly turning, so as to not stir my sleeping beauty. I opened the door and stepped out. Suddenly, as if I were stepping onto the Arctic plains, my body was overcome by a wind of goosebumps. I felt the unquestionable presence of something watching me. My mind, on full alert, wanted to turn back and hide behind the safety of the closed door and the warmth of the room that I just a moment ago knew.
As the man of the house, it was my duty to disrupt and overcome the terrible actions of an intruder or even the Devil himself if he were to visit the dreams of my children. So despite my fear, I pushed myself onward.
I tip-toed quietly down the hallway and met something preternatural. There, on the top of the half-wall separating the stairwell from the landing was a black shadow. I felt its stare furrow into my very soul. Its small stature could only mean that it was one of those impish demons that cause mischief in the minds of godly people.
For some reason that I don’t even know, I reached my hand out to touch the thing. As I my unsure advance made contact with the creature it made the most hideous sound. It was like the screaming of an old witch being burned at the stake. Although; in reality it was the screech of my cat as I startled it awake. It ran off to some quieter place to sleep.
Still on high alert I crept down the stairs and into my unlit living room. I peeked out the window to survey our property. Just then another shadowy figure ran out of my sight, hiding behind the car. I took a quick breath and my German shepherd began a low growl from where she slept at the corner of the couch. I reached for my cell phone to dial 911 but only slid my hand across pocket-less boxer shorts. Then I remembered my phone was still upstairs charging.
My mind raced.
Just then my body reminded me of why I was down here in the middle of the night. It was now an emergency. So I pranced to the bathroom.
“This will give me a moment to think.”
As I sat there I began to hear a tap, tap on the bathroom door.
“Oh dear God, now what?” I thought to myself.
I quickly filed my paperwork and stepped in front of the door, readying myself to face what unseen thing may lie in wait for my life.
I grasped the handle and swung, with fierceness, the door wide open. The thing lunged at me from the other side and walloped me in the head. Before I could tell who or what it was I was thrown to the floor with a thud. As I lay there, I looked up to the ceiling. A red balloon bounced along and then rested. After that I heard no more tapping.
I felt like Ichabod Crane running from the Headless Horseman. I’ve found the head but not the horseman. Again I ambled to the front door, this time flicking on the porch light. I peered out the window to the driveway and watched the heavy fall breeze sway the thick branches of our oak tree. The full moon cast fleeting shadows over my car and back again.
Now, humbled and a bit bruised, I turned on the inside lights. My black cat purred, “good morning”, as he rubbed against my leg. My dog also greeted me with a long stretch and a wag of her tail.
Relieved that they were the only ones that watched my ridiculous exhibition of displaced fear, I walked back to my bedroom. Just as I was about to close my eyes I heard Heavy footsteps below, and the shutting of a door.
I looked up and then with a peaceful sigh, rolled over and went to sleep.
