“Mmm, think so,” said Dale. “How about you?”
“I’m fine. It takes more than swerving to miss a deer, and to drive off a mountain road down an embankment to take me out of action. It’s too dark to see how far down the embankment we went.”
“The SUV start?”
“Dunno, sis, I’ll try.”
“That doesn’t sound good.”
“Nope, it’s not gonna start. No headlights either; must have broken them out. Having fun yet? Great start to a vacation to celebrate our completing college at midterm.
“Just one last bro and sis fling before auctioning ourselves off to the highest bidder to become steady tax payers.”
“If we live that long.”
“Sis, we got problems. Like, where are we? Like, it’s cold and we have no heat. Like, we only have a couple of blankets and nothing to drink except the coffee in the thermos. And, that I know of, there’s no food.
“Is there’s a flashlight in the glove compartment?”
“Nope, no flashlight,” said Dale. “Now, that leaves us with more of a hill than a dale.”
“Oh, wow,” said Hill. “That thoughts gonna have to feed, water, and keep us warm until morning?”
“When’s morning?”
“Well, it’s about 8:30. So, I guess we’ll be served breakfast in nine or ten hours.
“You know, sis, that concept of a hill and a dale is more powerful than this mountain or whatever roams around it can handle. Let’s curl up and share those two blankets.”
“Oh good, you’re warmer than I am,” said Dale. We haven’t done this since spending the night in our tree house.”
“Ya, but that was because we were scared, not freezing.”
Hill and Dale McTrip were probably as fraternal a set of twins as God ever knitted. They were so un-identical; twas hard to conceive of them being from the same solar system let alone the same womb.
Dark complexioned, Hill came into the world sprouting the tell-tale characteristic of a male. With a pallid countenance, Dale entered the stream of life as a girl. Only a wisp of dark hair identified her head from the tucks and folds of the white blanket a nurse wrapped her in.
Like the togetherness of opposing ends of a magnet, though, they grew up as one.
“Hill, you awake”
“I am now, and, no, I’m not going to take you potty. You’re on your own.”
“Oh shush. Are you scared?”
“Dale, we have no idea what’s tomorrows gonna be like. We best try and sleep.”
“Do you think God’s part of all this?”
“I don’t know, why don’t you ask Him?”
“I have, but He tells me to ask you.”
“Why would He do that?”
“Because, even though we’re twins, you’re my big brother, and He gave you to me to answer questions I have about Him.”
“I don’t know much. You went to church, too. One of the things we learned was to believe in Him and not to worry because He’d take care of us.”
“Do me a favor,” said Dale. “Pretend we’re in the tree house and we’ve heard that owl hoot, and I’m afraid. You’d tell me the owl hooted to scare any mice away that might be trying to sneak in for something to eat. Remember?”
“Ya, I was scared too, but I had to make you feel safe. You see, even though we were twins, I was your big brother.”
“That’s the way it is now, you’re still my big brother. I need you to tell me about God and make me feel secure.”
“Ok, sis, this is what I think I know. I remember learning that God said “Let there be light”; and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3) Dale, if He spoke light into existence it means He’s in control of whatever’s light, whether it’s the sun, moon, stars, or whatever. He’s Boss over it all.
“Right now, all I can think is light is much bigger than this mountain. If He’s in control of this mountain and protecting us, we’re not going to get hurt by it or anything in it. Maybe, He has us here to protect us from something that’s further down the road.
“I believe that where He has us is the best place for us now. He knows the hills and dales of our lives. Make sense?
“Sis?
Her even breathing told Him she did.
