Maybe that is why I have a hard time accepting the plight of the lazy man. When I work hard all day long while a co-worker hides in a corner or sits down on the job, yet receives the same amount of pay, it gets my dander up. Even worse, are those who never work at all, though able-bodied, yet rather chose to let our government feed and clothe them.
I am all for helping people get back on their feet again. In fact, I am very involved in the distribution of food at our local food pantry and very happy to bless those who come there. Most everyone could use a helping hand now and then. However, to continue to feed off the hard work of others is being just plain lazy. The bible says that if a man doesn’t work, he shall not eat (II Thess. 3:10).
Thinking about this while reading my bible, I wondered if I am sometimes lazy when it comes to seeking the Lord. Do I spend a few minutes in the Word and then expect God to make me a mature Christian? Do I spend a moment in prayer expecting God to grant my every wish?
It takes work to have a close relationship with God. I should seek Him with as much diligence as I would at my place of employment. A person who sluffs-off at his job most likely will never be promoted or climb the ladder of success. So too, I will not mature without putting some effort into knowing God. If I know the character of God from reading His word and seeking His face, then I most likely would know what He expects from me. I would be assured that He would answer my prayers, if I prayed according to the principles He has put in His Word.
Furthermore, when I go to church I should participate in the service and not expect to be spoon-fed by my pastor. He has spent time with God to receive a message to bring to our congregation. Then he preaches from the heart, as best he can, the message he feels God has spoken to him to share with us.
I need to prepare to receive that message. I need to make sure my heart is right and my sins are forgiven. I need to make sure there is no un-forgiveness in my heart to prevent me from hearing and receiving that message. I should be prayed up and prepared with an open heart to receive what God has to say to me, personally, each Sunday. Then I need to enter into the worship and listen attentively. I can’t expect my pastor do all the work and I receive all God’s blessings without any effort.
In II Timothy it tells me to study to show myself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed (II Tim. 2:15). Jesus said “I am the bread of life (John 6:35).” John 6:27 say “Labor not for the meat which persiheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you”. (KJV) If I don’t work at it, I will not eat the food that God has prepared for me. Let me not be lazy in my walk with the Lord.
