The pretty lady who lived on his farm was chasing him again with her gardening hoe.
He had never done anything mean to her or tried to harm her in any way. She was simply a person who hated him for who she thought that he was. He was born as a snake. He had no control over how he looked and he surely couldn't change any of his physical attributes. If that were possible, he would have grown legs years ago as it would certainly make getting around a lot easier!
If only the woman would open her eyes to see past the fact that he was green and scaly. If she could do that, and give him a chance, they might become friends.
Unbeknownst to her, the little snake watched over her garden daily, feasting on a consistent diet of the beetles that flocked to eat the ripening tomatoes in her tomato patch.
If she knew that he tended her garden, she might see that the little snake was a GOOD snake and allow him to live peacefully with her on the farm. But how could he get her to notice this when her mind was set so strongly against ALL snakes?
The little snake thought and thought. He couldn't speak, so there was no way to talk to her. He couldn't take the risk of sliding up beside her in the garden so that she would see him eating the harmful insects because she would kill him upon sight.
Sadly, he came to the conclusion that his only option was to move away from the farm. He would miss his rabbit friends in the garden, and the big pond where he liked to sun himself in the afternoons. He would even miss the pretty lady. Although she hated him, the little snake knew that it really wasn't about him personally.
Trying hard to blink back the tears, the little snake started his journey to the forest. He had visited the forest when he was younger and knew that he could make a home there beside the stream and the big trees. He would be fine, but his heart already ached for his home on the farm as he loved it so much.
***
Days and weeks went by and the little snake was growing accustomed to his new home. The moss that grew around the big trees made a comfortable bed and there was always plenty of food to be found under large rocks.
The weather was growing cooler and he longed to see his rabbit friends just once more before winter came, so one morning, he set out early for the farm.
When he arrived, he couldn't believe his eyes.
Complete devastation.
Hundreds and hundreds of beetles clung to withering and dying stems that had only a few weeks ago been beautiful, fruitful tomato plants. The garden was now ugly and uninviting. Even the rabbits had deserted it.
With no reason to stay, the little snake headed back to his new home in the forest.
As he traveled, the little snake reflected upon the recent changes in his life. He was still saddened that he had been forced to leave his home on the farm, but he had learned some valuable life lessons.
He now knew how much he affected his environment. The small things that he did had made a difference. He also understood that his value was not determined by one closed-minded individual, even if she was the prettiest lady that he had ever seen.
It was her loss. It was time to move forward without looking back.
Anxious to begin his life anew, he slithered proudly toward the forest. He had a purpose and he knew that he made a positive difference in the world. He vowed from that day forward to stop comparing himself to others and to always be the best little green snake that he could possibly be.
