As I travel, I keep my eyes open for changes to notice. The hard concrete changes to soft green grass. It is not very tall so no one needs to mow it. It looks just right. In the morning light I can see the drops of dew or could it be the left-over drops of rain. Any way with my first step forward I see the toes of my shoes sprinkled with drops of water from the grass. I am used to water on my shoes so I don’t pay any head.
I am looking for changes I see as I travel out this morning. I like getting out in the mornings especially when the sun is shining. Colors just have a different hue with sunlight shining. As I look up at the greens of the trees around me, I notice something else. It is not that I haven’t noticed it before but I marvel each time I take note of it. God chose to make leaves of different trees and bushes different shades of green. I wonder if it makes God sad when we don’t take time to notice the little things that he has done for us. I am sure it does if we don’t mention our thankfulness to him for his creation. I know some of the green leaves will stay green all year long while the leaves of other trees and shrubs will begin to fall when their work for the year has been accomplished.
And just as I am speaking of different leaves there is a lovely yellow one lying nestled in the green grass. Now, almost immediately, I notice it is not the first one on the ground but several others have fallen. They have finished their work of making food for the tree to grow. Now as I extend my gaze around me I see more things to marvel at among the blades of grass. Small round whitish yellow object appear. I have to bend down to get a closer look. My knees feel the coolness of the wet grass but I continue to kneel to get a better look. Mushrooms! - small as a button and just a pretty. No taller than the grass. Here. There. All over in front of me. So many I can’t count them all. Why haven’t I seen these before? I stay on bended knee for just a moment to savor the sight. They will not be here for long and then they will be gone. Again I marvel at more of God’s creation and these just for me.
As I rise and continue my journey falling water catches my attention. I know it is there but it also beckons me to come for a look. I know what is there. Water! Water, splashing over rocks and back into its pool. The red darts are the goldfish that belong in the pool. They are awake. They see me coming and dart away as if there was some place to hide. All they can do is to go deeper but they are still visible but dark red, shadowy objects but still there. I will feed them later. My journey must come first.
My eyes extend across the dew laden lawn. It is there, big as life, at least the leaves are big. They must be a foot across but look, look, there among the top branches. Something white. What could it be in November? I don’t hurry on this journey as it is only a few steps away and I am careful not to step on all the mushrooms. As I approach the plant, there, head high on the top branches I see white stalks with several white bulbs. I can’t really describe them. They are so different. Each of the little bulbs is a mass of much smaller white bulbs but these are blooming. Their little anthers and stamens sticking out but they are so small. I know they are flowers because a honeybee is nimbly bussing over the parts, stopping here and there and then off again. And again I marvel at God’s creation. This plant, so different and yet flowers on this six foot tall bush in November.
My journey must come to an end but I encourage you, my readers, to make time for these miniature travel adventures where you take time to marvel at God’s creation even at your back door.
