It is an, "I've been caught" experience; one of those, "How could I be so stupid?" moments.
We hide our face because we do not wish to see the faces of those around us, we protect ourselves from the smiles, or smirks, or dropped jaws, depending on the seriousness of our erroneous deed or word.
Of course we hide only our own face. It is the facepalmer that cannot see, while the observers are watching in full view. Not to mind, it remains at that time our only recourse to block the onlookers from our sight.
These thoughts bring to my mind a time in the future, spoken of by the Prophet Isaiah, and by John, in the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ.
Isaiah 2: 19 "And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of His majesty, when He arises to shake terribly the earth."
Revelation 6:15 & 16 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the rocks of the mountain, and said to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sits on The Throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb."
This is an example of serious facepalming. These are people who did not access the sacrifice of the blood of Jesus for the remission of their sins and now, although they try, they can neither block God from their view, nor yet themselves from His view.
The truth is, and has always been, that we cannot hide from God. He is the "all seeing God;" from our first breath on earth to the last breath we breathe, He sees us at all times.
There is a remedy for the "fearing" to come before the face of God. That remedy is Jesus Christ and His salvation given to us, free of charge for the receiving of it, which then becomes our satisfactory covering for us before God, and we then have no fear of God's wrath, nor of God's Face.
I may continue to do stupid and embarrassing things; I may yet have need to facepalm before my associates, but not before the God of Heaven and Earth Who looks at me through the perfect blood of Jesus.
Hebrews 10: 12, But this man, (Jesus) after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God;
Hebrews 10:14, For by one offering He has perfected forever them that are sanctified.
Hebrews 10:18, Now where remission of these (sins) is, there is no more offering for sins;
Hebrews 10:19, Therefore, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, this new and living way, which He has consecrated for us,
Hebrews 10:22, Let us draw near (to God) with a true heart full of confidence, assured by our faith.
We do stand in awe of God, but covered by the blood of Jesus we do not fear to see God, but rather look forward to the experience because our confidence is in Jesus and His blood sacrifice.
NO facepalming before God is involved for those who accept Jesus as their Savior!
