They had envisioned the baby’s first words and first steps. Their minds had already planned the first birthday party. So many plans for the future had been discussed between the two of them.
During the nine months both parents had patted the expectant mom’s stomach and talked and sung to the unseen child. They exclaimed over every kick the active baby made. At night they would play lullabies and read nursery tales as the baby slept in the mother’s womb.
The nursery was prepared and ready for the expected arrival. The young couple had saved every available penny so they could make the room special. Yellow was the color of choice. It was a warm and sunny room, filled with stuffed animals of every size and kind. The scent of baby powder welcomed you as you entered the room. Baby clothes washed and neatly folded lay ready to clothe the little one. Soft blankets were in the crib waiting for the small one they would keep warm.
The temperature was dropping outside on this winter morning. The roads were icy and slick. The wind was sharp and prickly as the couple made their way to the hospital. They were excited and nervous, both at the same time. Contractions had begun hours earlier and they had timed each one. The due date was past and the mother-to-be was sure this was the real thing.
The delivery was quick and without any problems. The baby was healthy and alert as she made her arrival into the world. It was 5:15 am; a time of the morning when it’s quiet and still. A smile of contentment and pride filled the tired mother’s face as she counted the fingers and toes of her flesh and blood. A precious baby girl, wrapped in a pink blanket was shown to the new daddy. His heart was changed that early morning in January. The instant love he felt was nothing he had ever experienced before. As this little girl grasp the pinky finger of her daddy, he knew there was nothing he would not do for his child, regardless of how old or independent she became in the years to come. He was her protector and defender forever.
The mother lay watching the interchange between her new beloved daughter and the man she trusted and loved with all her heart. Joy filled her heart as she thanked God for her husband and her daughter. Tears rolled down her face as she watched her family this winter morning of January 1952.
This is the story of the day of my birth as told to me by my parents.
