That sparked an interest in me that would end up as a career. When I was seven, my mom would film me opening gifts with a regular eight millimeter movie camera. At the age of nine, I made a TV camera out of some old boxes.
During my high school, I ran camera at sporting events that were on a local cable channel.
I went to Vo-tech and later attend a lighting workshop in Rockport, Maine. One of the highlights of my career was working for a shopping channel. I was the lighting lead, and loved to light and make people and the sets look good on TV. One of my favorite sets was an indoor garden that had a blue sky a realistic-looking clouds.
Now, that I have left the broadcast industry, I open the mail for nine charities that help children, veterans, and disabled police officers. Although, I still run the camera at church as a volunteer, I feel valued because people have learned things because of my experience.
I would love to get back into the television industry; however it has changed so much that it’s hard to get back in. At the shopping channel, I was a camera operator for three years. Nowadays they have replaced people with robotic cameras. I worked for a video production company that produced training videos for companies. Most of that work has been replaced by power point presentations. They don't need a camera person because it’s all graphics. I could work as an audio/visual person at a school or hotel, but I lack the computer experience.
I am so conflicted; I ask myself, what have I done? I see people that are still in the industry, and I get jealous of them because I want to be where they are.
When I worked in television, I didn't keep God first. I went to church, but I was not a living like a Christian. I took God's name in vain. Today, instead of wanting to serve my self interests, I want to serve the Lord. Jesus cleaned up my mouth and my life.
"I say this because I know what I am planning for you," says the Lord. "I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you hope and a good future." Jeremiah 29:11
I need to remember that the Lord knows what is best for me. If I can learn to keep a balance between a career and the Lord, maybe he will let me get back into the industry. If not, I can have peace because it is in God's plan to life where I serve him.
