When I wasn't in church hearing music, my mother was playing the piano at home. She'd taken some lessons as a girl but her greatest strength was hearing a melody and producing it on the ivory keys beneath her fingers.
With a mother who loved music, it's no surprise that my brother and I both flow in this arena of the arts. My brother has my mother's ear and I have her voice. There's something rich about the way my mom sings. A warmth that makes you feel like you've been surrounded by a warm quilt. And always, without fail, there is an anointing to every song she sings.
Her love for the Lord is very deep and she endeavored to raise her children in his ways. So, every Sunday evening, I'd sit with my parents at service. I remember my mom singing songs at church that she'd written herself, but mostly I recall her worshiping.
"Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. There's just something about that name. Master. Savior. Jesus. Like the fragrance after the rain."
Amazing. Every time I hear that song, I hear my mother's voice. Harmonizing with the simple melody line that most of us sing; she blended beautifully without sticking out. There was something comforting about her voice in general. But for me it was always about HER voice singing THAT song.
You see, not everyone who's been raised in church follows thru with its teachings. For me, it became more than going to a building and hearing bible stories; I came to really know the Lord my Sunday school teachers spoke about.
Thru trials and triumphs, I fell in love with the Son of God. As I heard about him, read his word and sensed his presence; my mother's song became my own. Now it is my voice that harmonizes with those around me singing about the wonderful name of Jesus.
