The songs in the musical all have meaningful messages, yet one particular song moves me each time I hear it: Sunrise, Sunset. Tevye, the main character, sings this poignant melody at his daughter’s wedding. It speaks about how fast the kids have grown up and of time passing so quickly. The chorus laments:
Sunrise, Sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
King Solomon spoke of the passing of years and how even though things are different, they are the same. In the Book of Ecclesiastes, he writes:
“Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
The sun rises and the sun sets and hurries back to where it rises.
The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course.
All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place streams come from, there they return again.
All things are wearisome, more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing nor the ear its fill of hearing.
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”(NIV)
Circumstances change, yet life remains the same. Babies are born, they grow up, they may get married, and they die. Seasons come and go. Time comes and goes. Life comes and goes.
The movie has a heart-breaking ending, and we are left to ponder what happens next. Life as we know it has its sorrows and joys, its happiness and its tears. But when we have Jesus Christ, who never changes, we have the strength to face whatever happens.
The years speed by, and life recycles itself, yet, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8 NIV)
