He continued, "Today we honor these students for their perseverance when four years ago their goals may have seemed unreachable. We are encouraged by their persistence when they may have wanted to quit but instead today have finished the educational. We are awestruck by their patience and due diligence dedicated to their goals. And finally we are inspired by their passion in finding a purpose for their lives."
Thunderous applause erupted across the university gymnasium as family members from every corner of the United States to congratulate their own college graduate. Often discovering many of their fellow graduates were among the first in their family to complete such a once unreachable dream. These college graduates were the glimmer of hope that no one should lose heart because these graduates did not.
Today many of my fellow classmates have majored in Education, Business, Biology, History and Philosophy. They hope Education will allow them to become a gifted teacher, that Business will allow them to become a successful entrepreneur. They hope Biology will allow them to find a cure for cancer, that History will allow them to become one of its most brilliant minds. Perhaps Philosophy will allow them to divulge the deepest drudges of the human mind.
Yet as I stand here today I did not major in Education, Business, Biology, History and Philosophy instead I’ve chosen to major in Life with a minor in Love and Laughter. Life, love and laughter are a reflection of our history, our culture, our religion, our politics and our diversity. It’s a compilation of our past, present and our future; it’s a compilation of our humanity. Our lives are the silent witness to the essence and evolution of our history and our humanity. Our lives are intertwined by our capacity to communicate, our capacity to collaborate, capacity to create connections and our capacity for change.
Every moment we live, love and laugh is an expression of our thoughts or emotions; it’s about creating connections and defining our cultural and social identities. Our innate human ability to communicate allows us to create cultural, social, physical and psychological connections with the world around us through the simple usage of words. We allow ourselves to create connections through conveyance of our emotions and our perceptions, often we adapt ourselves to the world because the world will not always adapt to us.
Our lives are interpersonal and intrapersonal, verbal and non-verbal, communication is formal and informal, our lives expressive and impassive and our lives are collaborative and concealed. Sometimes our lives are collaborated through expressions, emotions; sometimes our lives are strident and even silent.
Our ability to love and laugh allows us not only to react but also to interact, but also allows us to dream but to also define ourselves, it encourages reflection and also realization. Our moments of love and laughter are a compilation of everything we long for and everything we long to become and in the end it truly connects us through creativity, confidence and collaboration. Our human nature is innately driven to seek connections through communication, collaboration, change and transform culture. We must know how we to communicate and connect with others in simplistic scenarios such as through conversation, connecting through our commonalities and culture before we can even begin to connect with others either through perceptions or emotions. First we must convey our emotions and create a common connection before we create an emotional connection.
In this world we can also be certain that our lives transform our culture through communication, our capacity to create connections and our capacity to change. Change like death encompasses our civilization, our worldview, our symbolic relationships, our stabilizing and perpetual mechanism of a society and our social and culture intra- and interdependence among ourselves. Our lives are much like our deaths change is the essence of everything unknown, undiscovered and undisturbed deep with the ever widening chasms of communication, creation of connections, capacity to understand change and their infinite ability to transform culture through the simple power of love and laughter.
In this world we can also be certain that our lives transform our culture through communication, our capacity to create connections and our capacity to create change. Today while many have majored in Business or Education, I’ve chosen to major in Life with a emphasis on Love and Laughter.
