We’re in between patrols, and I just wanted to send you a quick e-mail:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAMANTHA!
How I wish I could be there to see you turn 6—such a big girl now! I’ll be home soon, at least that’s the rumor.

I scanned in a book Samantha wrote for school (attached); and I copied the words below, just in case it doesn’t come through--

SHE WENT FAR, FAR AWAY TO WAR.
MY MOMMY HELPS WARRIORS WHEN THEY GET HURT.
JUST LIKE SHE HELPS ME WHEN I GET HURT.
SHE COMFORTS THE WARRIORS.
JUST LIKE SHE COMFORTS ME.
SHE WRAPS BANDAGES AROUND THEM.
JUST LIKE SHE WRAPS ME WHEN I’M HURT.
SHE PRAYS FOR THEM.
JUST LIKE SHE PRAYS FOR ME.
AND JESUS HEALS THEM.
JUST LIKE HE HEALS ME.
MY MOMMY IS A GOOD MOMMY,
AND A GOOD MEDIC.
JUST LIKE JESUS.
Can you believe our baby girl is a writer? She takes after you!
We pray for you every night, Mish, for God’s protection.

Your last message makes me cry. (I’m crying now as I write this.) The attachment didn’t make it through—it was probably too large. What a wonderful story—thank you, Punkin.
God is so good.
We came into sniper fire recently, and God used me to save the lives of the Commanding Officer and the driver. I’ll tell you more about it when my tour of duty is over. I’m hoping and praying to see you both soon.
Well—gotta go.

Miraculously—because not many Units were going home for the holidays--on the Monday before Thanksgiving, Michelle’s plane landed at the local airport.
As the plane taxied toward the terminal, Michelle bowed her head and whispered, “Thank You, Jesus.” After almost all of the passengers exited the plane, Michelle followed last. It was a habit she learned while deployed in Iraq: medics followed always behind the warriors to see where they could be of assistance in any given real-time battle situation.
It was the attitude of a servant.
With great anticipation, she nervously walked through the tunnel into the terminal. As she turned the corner around a brick wall, one of the normally empty Airport waiting areas was teaming with close family and friends, and most of all—
Tom and Samantha.
“MOMMY! MOMMY!” Samantha ran and embraced Michelle, and Tom followed. In that eternal moment, Michelle held on to her sweethearts with all of her strength.
Tom whispered through tears to his bride, “I love you, Mish, with all of my heart.”
Michelle whispered back, “I love you, too….” Then she added enthusiastically, so all could hear, “ I LOVE YOU TWO! “
The crowd clapped, and laughed.
It was an impromptu Family Reunion: Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and a few friends. All showed up to honor Michelle’s recent bravery as a medic.
A large banner was strung up between two poles:
WELCOME HOME MICHELLE!
An American flag and a U.S. Army flag stood proudly on either side. A large cake, with AMERICAN HERO written on it stood as the centerpiece
“This is incredible. How did you arrange all this, Tom…?”
“Let’s just say, I have airport friends in high places.” Tom replied, winking.
Just then Samantha ran off and grabbed her backpack. She skipped back, pulled out something and handed it to Michelle.
“Here, Mommy! This is for you.”
“This is the book you wrote?”
“Yes, Mommy.”
“Check out the last page, Mish—Samantha just added it this morning.“
“Ohhh….this is WONderful, baby girl.” Michelle carefully turned the pages as she read the book, smiling.
“And I drew all the pictures, too!”
Michelle’s smiling eyes turned to tears as she read the new last page:
MY MOMMY IS MY HERO.
“Oh, Punkin, thank you…”
Love, hugs and kisses followed: it was a sweet Morris reunion.
