Mia was smart. Okay—maybe it just seemed that way compared to our other cats. There was Molly, who would spend hours staring at the back of the couch with her tongue hanging out. And then there was Ziggy, who was once chased around the house by a gerbil in its exercise ball. Mia was definitely in charge.
She taught me to be a fighter. Mia was not afraid to defend our yard, I mean her yard, from any and all intruders of the feline or canine variety. She also disappeared for three weeks, presumably trapped somewhere (not her fault of course). Mia suddenly reappeared at the back door quite skinny and ready to reclaim her place as the feline queen. Even a brain infection could not stop her, although she always walked around with her head slightly tilted after that.
She taught me to play. No- she didn’t go for the cliché ball and string toys (Molly’s favorite.) Those simple toys were beneath her. Mia loved hot wheels. She would sit at a curve of the plastic track with a look of sheer anticipation in her eyes. When the unsuspecting car would zoom by, Mia would send the car flying with a swift wipe of the paw. She actually tried the same tactic with cars on the television, but wasn’t quite as successful.
She taught me that sometimes being finicky is okay. I didn’t trust people that she didn’t approve of. Needless to say, I was relieved when my fiancé was introduced to the family she quickly climbed up and claimed his lap as a suitable napping spot. He’s a keeper.
She taught me that goodbyes are never fun. Mia got mad every time the suitcases appeared and remained miffed for weeks after we returned. But upon my first return from college, her reaction was quite unexpected. Mia’s eye got huge and she refused to come anywhere near me for several days. I honestly believe she thought she was seeing a ghost.
Return from college? But I said I got Mia when I was three. I did. Mia lived almost twenty years. Goodbyes are indeed no fun. Long live the queen!
