Topic: Mother (as in maternal parent) (04/24/08)
“Let’s go to the Movie Gallery... Hope you drive,” I tell my daughter. Oh how I would regret those words in just a few hours. As we begin our little excursion, I thank God for the angels surrounding our car.

Hope seems to be improving her driving skill I thought as we make the thirty minute drive to the next town. This can’t be right. My “little girl” is on the driver’s side of the car? Wasn’t it yesterday I lingered on the other side of her kindergarten door listening to her soft sobs for mommy?

“Hope be careful...slow down making that curve… don’t get too close to that car… stop… now go, go, go,” I exclaim, as I teach my child to drive. What am I doing teaching my child to drive? There’s got to be a better way to do this. But the reality is she’s got to learn! She’ll be off to college soon and I’ll be on the other side of her dorm’s door sobbing softly.

As she careens into the parking lot, I think this is getting easier. Carefully she parks, slowing down as she approaches the curb. Picking up my purse I am stunned by the deafening sound of bricks falling and glass shattering. My car, jumping the curb, is in the entrance door of the store. Hope put her foot on the accelerator instead of the brake and in a millisecond our serene environment is in chaos.

As I order my senses, I realize the crash has only crushed my teen’s feelings. Unharmed, I immediately go into the “mommy mode” comforting my child.

Yes, my beautiful jag is no longer so beautiful. Yes, my insurance will likely go up. Yes, what a bill it will be to repair all the damages but praise God for those angels! No one was hurt. No sobbing necessary on either side of the door today.

Enjoyed reading this! Loved the "mommy mode" phrase. So true that jags are nothing to compare to one's child. Lovely.

What a neat little glimpse of life here. I liked that line with there were no tears/sobs on either side that day. Wonderful! I especially liked the first lines...^_^

You have a great story here packed with emotions many of us can relate to. To make it even better, you might want to build it up a bit more to the crash and perhaps more dialogue on both parts. It is a good scene worth developing further! How many of us have our children crash through a building!!:) So glad no one was hurt!
