“They didn’t say it! They didn’t say ‘I told you so’. My parents knew it was a wrong decision. I should have seen the signs but I wanted to believe the best. I didn’t listen to them.”
Brave words from a broken man who was having to cancel his marriage through the totally unmanageable gambling habits of his wife, and fight in the courts for full custody of the two little girls.
The gambling certainly wasn’t in evidence at the time of marriage, but there were other signs which could perhaps have been read – the excuses, the indulgences, the “I’m just a (dear little) new Christian” sugary sweetness.
The fact is the girls have to be protected from the vicious, manipulating anger of the pourer of the food money down the throats of those abominable poker machines. No use wanting to believe the best right now because there is no best. There is only neglect, abuse, theft, lies, misery, filth, and a whole lot of wrong learning curves.
The time is late and thought patterns have been inherited already. There will be a big task in undoing that. No use wishing the past had been different. It wasn’t. No use hoping that normality will return. It won’t. No use pondering on how it all began. That will be unproductive right now. There has to be a new start, and praise our Lord Jesus, He is the Master of new starts. There has to be a new vision – possibly a lonely one – but “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
There has to be a battle and it has to be fought ruggedly, with stern determination and a strong backbone. The thought of losing the battle is unimaginable. The judge has to be convinced of the best plan for the daughters. A quiet and very gentle man has to become vociferous on behalf of his children lest their lives lie in ruins – unthinkable thought. There is a future to be established, won, grasped, brought into being, Everything is at stake and this is not a game of chance! Love and gentleness has to take up every weapon it can find to destroy the power and effects of the deep, deep pain that has been their lot, and create power, strength, vibrancy, dance, song, potential, healing, discernment and wisdom, faith and bold, humble obedience – not just observable and superficial, but real and thoroughly grounded in truth.
“…. the Truth will set you free”
These words were established in the beginning, along with the physical laws of the universe, f=ma etc. They are as perfect a formula as the mathematical equation is known to be.
If truth has been missed in the past, it is the absolute focus of the future, for therein lies freedom. If Truth is adopted as the arbiter of every situation, then freedom and life will ensue. Truth is the future. Truth has hope. Truth is Life. Truth is wealth, and wonderful! Truth is the weapon, the shining two-edged sword. When love becomes deft with this weapon the zone is healing, miraculous, empowering, all any man could hope for. This is the mind of Christ, the ultimate! We are made and redeemed in the image
of God, with the mind of Christ no less!
Let the past remain there.
Let the present and embrace Truth with love at every point and totally despise even the smallest suspicion of a lie.
The future will stand securely on this rock.
That is all that is needed. Even the most broken heart can rise to embrace the future when Truth (Faithful and True) opens the door on Life, Love and Freedom.
