“Ain’t really what I hear’d but what I done hear’d wer’nt right nice to repeat”, thought Ma Brown.
“Howdy, Miz Brown! Shore nuff is right nice to see ya’ll this mornin’. That big old city were’nt what it was cracked up to be. Fact of the matter is, were’nt nothin like that big ol producer told me. “
“Well, child, jest come on up on this here porch and tell me all about it. We all got dreams, don’tcha know, but sometimes they jest turn into nightmares afor we can get ourselves done woke up to the truth.”
Becky Lynn slowly climbed the steps up to Miz Brown’s porch and walked on over to the porch swing hanging down from the ceiling. As she leaned back and started to swing back and forth Becky looked around at the ivy hanging over the side of the crock pot, realizing just how much she had missed the little mountain town where she had spent so many years just wanting to escape.
“Ya’ll know how much I always loved to sing all them old cowboy songs my pa used to pick on his worn out guitar. All I ever wanted to do was sing them songs good a nuff to stand on that ol Opry stage and jest belt em out. I even lern’t how to play me a guitar of my own so I could write them songs folks love so much. I figured if I could make one up that would make folks cry, I’d soon be a star.”
“Well, Becky Lynn, what happened to make ya’ll so unhappy up yonder? Did that thar man done tell ya’ll some fibs, or what?”
“Miz Brown, it sure is hard to talk about it but I know you’d never tell a soul what a mistake I made trustin” that ol man that claimed he could make me rich. He done lied through his old gold tooth! He weren’t no producer at all unless ya want to include makin’ a good girl turn into one of them women of the night. And I ain’t talkin’ bout singing pretty songs at night. When I done figured out what that man had in mind I high tailed it out of that awful hotel room as fast as my legs could move.”
“ I sure am sorry ya’ll done had such a terrible experience, Becky. I reckon you gona be forgettin’ all about be’n a star on that Opry stage and jes settle down with Billy Joe and raisin’ a passel of young’uns now,”
“OH Lord no Miz Brown”. I jest took that happenin’ and I sit down with my new guitar and wrote me a song. Ain’t got no doubt it will be a big hit. If’n you got time I could jest strum a bit for ya?”
Well, I wondered down to that Nashville town
Thought I could really turn my life around
But that dirty old man done told me lies
Now his old mean body is a draw’in flies
He was a dirty old man tried to do me wrong
Tried to sell me to a pimp he knew
I pulled out my knife and took his life
Now his woman must be cryin the blues
Now I’m playing my guitar and singing my songs
I’m makin’ me a brand new life
Don’t need no music city to make me happy
Cause Billy Joe done asked me to be his wife.
“Well, Miz Brown, I gotta run on home now, don’t forget you cain’t tell a word about what I done told ya”.
“Child ya’ll know I wouldn’t never dream of tellin’ a soul. Bye now.”
I jest wouldn’t think about mention’in that to no one! Oh my there goes that telephone ringin’ again.
“Hello. Lula Belle? What all you been doin’ today? Ya’ll could never guess who jest stopped by—that’s right—Becky Lynn. That poor child has just been through the most awful thing, You know she jest got home from that Sin City and I jest cain’t hardly stand to tell ya’ll…..
