Dorcas’s favorite part of every birthday celebration came at the end, when a grand “Alleluia!” would summon the King, who wrote the new believer’s name in shining gold script in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Dorcas had other duties, too. When not organizing birthday festivities, she checked often with the Department of Guardian Angels, to monitor potential birthday celebrants: those who were close to coming to faith. This is where she sat today, talking with Nathaniel, the fifth assistant to the Overseer of Guardian Angels: United States Division.
“I’ve got a great possibility in Michigan,” reported Nathaniel. “Sarah Jefferson of Lansing has been doing some real soul-searching. Her guardian angel, Shoshanna, tells me that Sarah’s asking herself all the right questions. Yesterday, she even dug out the Bible she got from her church when she graduated from 6th grade.”
“Great!” exclaimed Dorcas. “I’ll be planning Sarah’s birthday celebration soon, then!”
After a brief discussion of several other promising candidates, Dorcas hurried off. She’d been paged to organize a rare birthday celebration for a new Vietnamese believer. This one would be spectacular!
It wasn’t until several days later that Dorcas met up again with Nathaniel. “Whatever became of Sarah Jefferson?” she asked. “I thought we’d have had her celebration by now!”
“I know,” replied Nathaniel sorrowfully. “She was so close. Shoshanna was watching her intently—just praying for the right person to come into her life and introduce her to the King. She even consulted with the guardian angel of one of Sarah’s neighbors…” Nathaniel consulted his Heavenly Data Assistant—“a Nicole Travers. Nicole’s a believer, so Shoshanna and Lydia teamed up to nudge her toward Sarah.”
“What happened?”
“Nicole felt their encouragement, that’s for sure. But she resisted it, telling herself that Sarah would be offended if she got ‘too pushy.’ Nicole’s keeping herself very busy with church projects now—she doesn’t have any time left for befriending Sarah.”
“What a shame! What has become of Sarah, then?”
“For now, she’s still searching for answers. But Shoshanna reports that she has started to investigate Eastern religions, and that her Bible is now buried under a pile of self-help books.”
Dorcas and Nathaniel paused for a moment, thinking about what might have been: Sarah Jefferson’s name in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and the King’s radiant smile as He wrote it there. “I hope it’s not too late for Sarah,” Dorcas said wistfully. “I would have loved to plan her birthday party.”
