A panic stricken Dixie frantically whispered, “Kelly, Did you see that? Did you hear that?”
“No what?”
“A flash of something…white….blue….popping…. I don’t know!”
Kelly caught Dixie’s glance out the glass doors. She was a little nervous herself but she couldn’t let on.
"Dixie’s such a baby about these things." Kelly was thinking as she went to have a look.
She’d always been that way about anything unfamiliar. A storm, sudden noises. She’d take off running or hide. Kelly could never relate.
They were so different, yet so close. Kelly enjoyed physical activity, Dixie enjoyed watching in the shade. Kelly was right on with the Frisbee, Dixie just watched it fly by – and the list goes on.
But tonight was a strange one for sure. Sudden flashes of light – strange noises. Dixie was really on edge. Kelly noticed Dixie heading for the table and knew what was next.
“Dixie! Don’t be ridiculous! Get out from under there. We’re inside the house and nothing is going to happen!”
Dixie couldn’t budge. Shaking, she thought with resentment, “Kelly lives way out there somewhere. She wouldn’t know danger if it bit her on the nose.”
“Kelly! The glass doors! They rattled!” Dixie whined as she bolted from under the table and ran to get under the covers in the back bedroom.
Kelly began to feel more than jittery herself. It was a night of strange happenings! They’re not usually left this late at night by themselves.
Suddenly Kelly grew still…“Dixie, come here! Listen…shhhh…. stop whining….. hurry!”
The screen door was opening at the front of the house. There were muffled voices. A piercing whistle! A tremendous BOOM…BOOM…BOOM! Dixie drew close to Kelly. Kelly could smell fear.
The handle turned, Dixie and Kelly’s bodies taunt, ready – one to run – one to strike.
The door open slightly at first, “Alpha Male! Alpha Female! You’re home!” barked Kelly and Dixie in unison.
“Oh Darling, look at the dogs!” Oh….. we should have known they’d be scared Charles!”
Alpha Female stroked a whining Dixie as Alpha Male pounded Kelly on the side. “Good dog Kelly. You took care of Dixie didn’t you?”
“Happy New Years girls! We brought you something!”
Dixie was already sniffing the bag in anticipation, wiggles trembling through her huge Bloodhound body.
Kelly subdued, her retriever senses at ease now the Alpha’s were home, she looked forward to the chew bone she could smell in the air.
Everything was all right; nothing could hurt them. It didn’t matter what was outside. “Our Alpha’s are bigger than anything out there.” Kelly moaned with pleasure as Alpha Male rubbed hard behind her ears.
“Good dog Kelly.”
