Topic: Surprised (09/06/07)
Seems like nothing is ever new and exciting. Just the same old dreary life. I am just sittin’ here in my rockin’ chair, rockin’.

“OH, Snookums, there you are. Jump on up here in my lap and let me pet you, you old rascal.”

As I was saying, same old thing, day in, day out. I get up out of bed, do all the daily toiletry and get dressed, usually the same outfit cause I have one that I like better than the rest. Then I stumble down into the kitchen with my walker, Thank God for that walker or I would be stuck in the bed the rest of my life. Can’t stand for more than a couple of minutes without feeling like I am about to fall flat on my face.

“Snookums, what would I do without you here to make conversation with. No one has time to come visit me and Lord knows I can’t manage to go visit anyone. There now I have tickled you behind your ear and rubbed your belly enough for now. Skeedadal , get on down and go catch a mouse”.

Well, now that old Snookums is out of the way and chasin’ Lord knows what to show me what a good hunter he is, maybe I can just lean back and rock some more. I sure hope that big old black cat doesn’t bring his catch to show me-ugg .

So lonely living alone like this, never having any company. Sure would be nice to just chat awhile with someone beside myself and old Snookums.

Seems like there is something special about this date: September 11th ?? I just can’t seem to bring it to mind what there is about that date….

What’s that , someone knockin’ on the front door? Who in the world could that be? No one called to say they were coming to visit. I just can’t quite remember what it is about this date, seems like …

”Wait a minute, I am comin’ as fast as I can with this blasted walker and these legs that don’t want to move.”

“ Happy Birthday, Grandma! Happy Birthday, Mama! Surprise, surprise, grandma, We brought the Birthday Cake and almost everyone in the family is here for your special 100th birthday! Look here at little Joanie, isn’t she just growing up too fast?”

“ Lord a Mercy, I done knowed it was somethin’ special about this here day but I just couldn’t quite bring it to mind. I am just so proud to see everyone, I might just have a birthday everyday so you’ll all come to see me.”

“ Snookums, what is that you have in your mouth ? Oh, no, that’s not a mouse, it’s my pretty little yellow canary! You bad, bad cat. I may never tickle you behind the ear or rub your belly again. What kind of birthday present do you think this is! Skedadal right now before I get hold of you.”

Fun stream-of-consciousness from a cantankerous oldster. I like it a lot.

One minor thing--since the date September 11 is so firmly in our minds as the date of the terrorist attacks, you might choose a different one. For a moment, I was thinking that your story was going to be about that.

The voice here is absolutely spot-on and made for a great read.

What a surprise for Grandma! I like the voice of this character very much. She tried to put the best face on her loneliness and make do with it. I was happy with the ending, too.
