Topic: Bold (emotionally) (08/30/07)
“The Meek and The Bold”, what a title.” thought Trey. “It sounds like the name of one of my sister’s soap operas.” Trey was in his second year at Holy Cross Bible Training School. The class assignment for the end of the semester was to write a paper on a biblical character that embodied boldness.

Trey was a having a little trouble with this assignment, in his studies he recalled Jesus saying in his sermon on the Mount, blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. * He had always thought it was a good thing to be meek, humble and patient. That is how he had always saw Jesus, a humble man, not someone who willingly brought attention to himself. But on the other hand the Apostle Paul had prayed for boldness so that he could speak to the people and share the gospel. Trey decided he would ask his Pastor for more clarification about these two men in the scriptures.

Trey met with Pastor Mike the next evening after calling him and explaining his dilemma.

“Good to see you Trey, come in, come in” Pastor Mike said gesturing to a chair in his office. He sat down behind the big desk that had stacks of paper and books on it. “Now what can I do for you today? You sounded a little stressed yesterday concerning your school paper.”

“Yes, Pastor Mike, my assignment is to write about the boldness of a biblical person and in the process, I found out that is contrary to what Jesus said we should be.”

“And what is that Trey?” asked Pastor Mike.

“Meek, according to Matthew 5:5.”

“So, what does boldness mean to you, especially in the context that the Bible speaks of?”

“I see the Apostle Peter as bold, and Paul too since he prayed for it, and don’t get me wrong I think boldness is a good thing, but how do I square it up with what Jesus said?”

Pastor Mike always knew that Trey would do well in Bible School he had an inquisitive mind. Three years ago he came to him and said that he knew there was a call on his life for the ministry and he wanted to go to bible school. Pastor Mike was thrilled for him and believed that he would become a great spiritual leader one day.

“Good question Trey. Let me ask you a question. Would you say overall, that Moses was a bold man?

Trey thought for a minute about the leader of the children of Israel, how he brought them out of Egypt, how he stood before Pharaoh and spoke the word of God boldly and unflinchingly. “Yes, I think Moses was very bold.”

“Well, the Bible says that Moses was the meekest man that ever lived. So, you see you can be meek and bold at the same time. Meekness is humility to God, knowing who is higher in authority, He reigns supreme. The meek will inherit the earth, because their characteristics will be Christ-like, humility to God only, patient and long-suffering. These qualities you need to get the job done. Christ was bold in his speech; remember how he called the Pharisees, “Generation of vipers!” and He turned over the money exchangers’ tables. That was sort of bold don’t you think?”

“Yeah, definitely, I see now, I was confusing bold with today’s rudeness that passes for boldness.”

“Paul prayed for the ability to be able to deliver the infallible truth or the gospel to the people with soundness and boldness of speech. Just like today it’s hard for people to be receptive if they’re doing the opposite of what you are telling them. You’ll find this out for yourself as you continue in ministry. Evangelists like the Apostle Paul, theirs is a traveling ministry and they don’t have the time to coddle people, they deliver the word of God and move on. The local pastor has to deal with the spiritual growth of his congregation because he has time to work with them.

“Thanks for the help Pastor Mike, I have a clearer understanding now. Now my title will make sense, “The Meek and The Bold.” They are one in the same.”

“Not a problem Trey, anytime.” Pastor Mike smiled as he shook the young man’s hand. He had a feeling he would be seeing a lot more of Trey with his questions.

This was very creative. I liked it a lot. We often think of meekness and boldness being opposites even thought they aren't.

There were a few punctuation errors, but nothing major.

Great job. Keep writing.

Yes, in fact I think it is meekness, true meekness, that makes boldness possible. As we submit to God we become transparent, the better for His light to shine through. Good article and nice presentation.
