It was evident he was short on cash because he was slacking on his newspaper route but like most mothers I gave in.
"It's in the cabinet in the blue and white cup."
"Thanks Mom."
My husband returned from work, saw the garden a mess and his first question was, "Where's Jimmy?"
"He's out with friends playing ball then going for pizza?"
"He didn't even clean up the garden like I asked before he left. Did he go to work?"
My motherly nature looked to protect him.
" I'll clean it up, it's no big deal. He had a hard week at school and missed work so I let him borrow a few dollars."
"You have no idea how to teach him responsability," he responded.
As angry as I was. I didn't doubt he was right.
Jimmy returned home that night, saw the garden cleaned, thanked and kissed me goodnight.
The next morning he woke up early and wanted to return to the park to play ball.
"Can I borrow five dollars mom?"
"For what," I asked.
"I want to go to the arcade after we play ball."
"What about work?"
"I'm going to go back next weekend."
I hesitated for a second then gave in.
"You know where it is son. In the blue and white cup in the cabinet."
"Thanks mom."
He kissed me and hurried out the door.
As much as I love Jimmy, I knew his father was right and I had better teach him responsability.
The following weekend came around and once again Jimmy slept in late and missed work.
When he woke up, he came downstairs, ate cereal and quickly took a shower.
"I have to run mom. The guys are going bowling and I want to go."
He didn't even mention that he missed work.
"Can I borrow ten dollars?" he asked.
"You know where it is. In the blue and white cup in the cabinet."
Jimmy opened the cabinet only to find that the cup was empty.
"There's nothing in there."
" I guess you didn't put it back in the last time you borrowed it."
"Now what do I do?" he asked.
" I suppose go back to work."
He got on his bike, grabbed his newpapers and hasn't searched in the cup since.
