One November day, which was gloomy here in England. I had anticipated a boring meal at the end of the day. However half way through the morning I had a telephone call from a young American friend who said ‘I completely forgot today is Thanksgiving, and was hoping you and Dave could come over this evening, I know it’s very short notice.’ I didn’t need much of a moment’s thought. I just said yes as the other prospect was so dull. As it was only a matter of hours I telephoned my husband of the news to make sure he arrived home early.
Luckily we did not live that far away, so armed with a bottle of my husbands home made wine we duly arrived. The smell of food cooking was delicious and the room was decorated with red Christmas cactus plants. A fire was roaring in the grate, and it was all very homely. We found our daughter and partner was also invited and duly sat down to a meal of succulent turkey. ‘ I phoned my mother on the best way to cook it’ she had said. Anyway it was a credit to her with lovely vegetables and mashed potatoes only the American’s know how so smooth. Even a vegetarian for my daughter who did not eat meat. Followed by Pumpkin pie I must say I had not tasted this dessert before, and really enjoyed it. Their seemed so much work in just a short time.
We then sat round the fire and enjoyed our wine. This lady was so happy that we had came to share a meal with her, and we were as well, as we in the UK do not celebrate Thanks Giving. What would have been an ordinary evening for us, was a pleasurable memory, with American hospitality.
