Earlier in the day the florist had delivered a beautiful arrangement. Her husband always made sure to celebrate this day. In fact this was a very important day to him and he often went to elaborate measures to show her how happy he was.
Over the past ten years there had been fancy dinners and wonderful parties. One year they went up in a hot air balloon. Another year her husband had it written in the sky. They even went on exotic trips. Last year they enjoyed a special cruise. No matter what her husband schemed up there was always a cake included. He also made sure to tell her months and months in advance. This year he said it would be better than any year. He said no more.
She was nervous and excited as the doorbell rang. Standing there, dashing as ever, was her husband of 27 years. He handed her a single rose and offered his arm to escort her to the car. Her stomach was churning with excitement and she pressed him for details. He smiled but revealed nothing.
When they arrived at the hall she was greeted by many familiar faces. She had surely been blessed by so many supportive friends. It was hard to wait and she gripped the hand of her husband as they took their seats. She continued to search the crowd but seemed to not find who she was looking for. Her husband cradled her shoulder knowing her wish.
Finally the moment had arrived. They said her name and she stood. Ten years. This milestone deserved recognition. She began to walk to the podium and it was then that she saw them. There beside the podium holding a cake were her three children. Tears streamed down her face and her hands began to shake. Ten years. She had been inviting them for ten years and they always seemed to have something else they needed to do.
She reached the podium and her children. "We're proud of you mom." said her oldest. "Ten years really does deserve recognition."
The audience cheered as she cut into the cake held by her children. That cake represented ten years of healing. Ten years of turning each day over to God. Ten years of building new bridges and repairing broken ones. Ten years of sobriety. This year's anniversary would be celebrated with her entire family. This year was better than any year to date.
