His son had traveled home.
And I should kill a fatted calf
To cook for him alone.
To praise, to love, to laugh again
The family would be one.
Bring the guests from near and far
The son is again at home.
So to the flock went I and searched
For a special calf alone
To prepare a royal feast
For this returning one.
For years the master waited
Though another he had at home.
He waited on the son who chose
To go out into the world alone.
And now I cook in celebration
For this returning one.
The son who stayed was filled with ire
Toward him who came back home.
Father, I have never strayed
Yet you give praise for this one alone.
You prepare in merriment
Not for me who stayed, but the other one.
His father shook his head and said
What is mine is thine, forever here at home.
But this one who has strayed
Is with us alive yet not dead and alone.
And so we cook and make merry
For this reunited one.
