That might be lots of fun
He’d always do such funny things
'Cause that’s the way it’s done
He’d plan some schemes to get us rich
But they would always fail
He’d try to plan a Boys’ Night Out
And he’d end up in jail.
My mom would be a paragon
Of wisdom, love and wit
We’d laugh each day and talk around
The table where we’d sit
Dad might tell jokes, like Ray Barone
Or be patient, like Ward Cleaver,
Or be rich, like Philip Drummond,
Or wise like Jason Seaver.
If Carl Winslow were my dad
My dad would be a cop.
I’d like to be a Huxtable;
If Cosby were my pop.
If there were problems in our home
He’d use his sitcom “power”
‘Cause every sitcom dad knows they’ll
Be solved in half an hour
He’d love my mom and all of us
But often fail to show it
If there was something to be done
He’d mess it up – I know it!
I guess there would be consequences.
It might cause lots of trouble.
‘Cause I don’t know if I would get
Al Bundy or Barney Rubble.
I guess I’ll keep the dad God gave
I don’t need all the rest
I guess that I’ve known all along
Our Father does know best!

"I wish I could write poetry
Then I could show you why
You made us laugh and won the prize
Your dad must be some guy!" - Why I don't write poetry, but SO admire those who can. LOVED IT!
I've never been able to write poetry myself, even though my mom is an avid poetress.
This poem is a winner!
A very good job! I also liked the "getting it done in half an hour" bit. But the pièce de résistance is your very last line which I only got on my second reading. "Our Father really does know best" - (Father Knows Best) Well executed! Very well done!
