Topic: Leadership (03/14/05)
Leaders come in many forms,
Not all are destined fame.
A few are self-sequestered,
Rejecting spotlight’s flame.

I know of one such leader
Who leads with gentle hand.
Such power in her whispers,
I’ve yet to understand.

She never led an army
To victory’s sweetest spoils.
Nor ever earned a medal
For all her earthly toils.

No fancy corner office,
Filled with lofty accolades.
Just a messy little junk draw
And a smile that never fades.

She governs well a household
In times both lean and stout.
Giving God the glory,
Her trust in Him devout.

Wise always is her counsel,
As to the Lord she led,
Her tiny little daughter,
Receiving daily Bread.

Her strength is in her weakness,
Or so she’ll always say:
“God’s grace is all-sufficient,
His presence is my stay.”

She taught, to be a leader
Your ‘self’ one must deny.
Pick up the cross of others
And hold God’s banner high.

Though time has slowed this leader,
Her tread no longer swift.
Mom’s sweet and tender guidance-
My family’s greatest gift.

When her time on earth is through;
Her tasks are all complete.
That’s when God will call her Home,
And waiting there, will greet.

On that bright and cloudless morn,
In heaven’s Great Beyond.
“Well done, My faithful servant!”
Her Savior will respond.

This is really good. I loved how you kept the identity of the person a bit secret as your poem unfolded, but as you neared the end I knew who you were talking about and thinking of my own Mom's face made me all teary-eyed. Thanks for this heart-felt poem. Very nice job.

Beautiful! I worked with young girs who felt that they had to work outside the home when they married or else they would be a leech on their husband. How they missed the grandest of a mother's role. How I wished I had had this poem to share with them. Is truly is inspirational! Keep sharing your gift.

Nancy, congratulations on a well-deserved win. 2nd place in the Level 2 Champion Challenge and 4th place in the Editor's Choice is really a credit to you. It may be worth considering a move up to Level 3 from the start of next quarter. If not, you will need to move up if you place in the Editor's Choice again in the future.
