Life is a struggle, and what makes it really difficult is that what is holy and beautiful can be juxtaposed against what is dark and depressing. Recently, as I walked my dog, I was admiring how green the aspen were against a perfectly blue sky. My heart praised God for allowing me to be a part of his creation. I happened to look down and saw a dead baby bird on the ground, fallen from his nest, and my heart sunk for that poor bird. I comforted myself with the thought that God cares for every bird that falls, and his spirit was mourning for the bird as well. If he cares for that fallen bird, he certainly cares for me.
It’s difficult to have a joyful spirit when we want the best in every situation, and a happy ending to every story. Many times, we don’t know the whole story, but we have to believe that God knows, cares, and is working to make our lives holy and beautiful if we will allow Him to. After all, he sent his son to experience a dark, depressing, and scary situation…death on a cross for our sins…and it became the most joyful, holy, and beautiful thing in our lives for those who believe.
A few days after I saw the fallen baby bird on the ground, I went in to work and couldn’t help but notice a bird chirping loudly in the hallway rafters. I tried to keep working, but the chirp sounded more desperate as the morning went on. The bird had unwittingly got himself into a horrible mess that could have meant the end of him. I kept sending instant messages to my husband about how it was distracting me. My husband, knowing that I have a soft spot for all creatures of God’s creation, enlisted the help of a co-worker to climb into the rafters to open a window. Using a broom, we coaxed the bird outside. At that moment, an animal control officer came into the building, responding to a call from an office next to us to help the same bird. When he saw that we had already accomplished this, he shrugged, laughed, and went on to his next stop. I couldn’t believe that so many of us had come together to help one bird, and I felt deep satisfaction thinking of that bird flying free once again.
It’s a lot like life, isn’t it?
