It was early November and already the cold was brutal, as he made his way through the pathless, dense forest. He and his party followed the perilous trek of the river and made camp. They had more than five hundred miles to traverse before reaching their destination but with determination and passion, he endured faithful to his duty.
When it came time to cross the swollen, raging river, they built frail rafts and prayed for God’s providential care. Hungry and thirsty, they would have to safely cross over before they could hunt and trap for provisions. With swift and sure strokes, they successfully crossed. The relief of it brought tears to many of their eyes but not to the keen, blue eyes of the twenty one year old. He had proved himself a man mindful of God’s favor and courageously trusted Him at all times.
The night was still except for the crackling campfire. He was out at the break of day. He knew all about the woods, and he knew with God’s help they would be taken care of. This was a test, the first of many he would face in his lifetime. Everyone who is assigned a divine assignment is first tested. This adventure prepared him for future battlegrounds. It has been said, “God saves his toughest battles for His mightiest warriors.
A nation of boundless opportunities, Washington was daring in his zest to fulfill God’s plan and defend its liberties. Later, he was chosen to lead the poorly armed forces of this nation in the war against England. He selected Valley Forge to spend the harsh winter in 1777. The conditions were terrible with only one in three of his men possessing shoes. The starvation, disease, malnutrition and exposure killed over twenty five hundred American soldiers. The difficulties and discouragements would have daunted a lesser man, but he was faithful and unflinching in his duty. He knelt in the snowy woods and prayed to the Being he called “the all-powerful guide and great disposer of human events.”
After seven years of sorrow, suffering, and death, America was free, and Washington was entrusted to govern this blessed land. He became known as the Father of our Country only because his greatness was rooted in the Father of all. His life shows us that God will honor those who honor Him.
Where are the honorable men today who are willing to defend this great nation by inviting God’s divine intervention? It is past time for this nation to turn our faces to God and kneel before Him in repentance. If our country is to remain a land of liberty, we must teach each individual to read and think on his own. Too many rely on the media to think for them and are willing to follow blindly. God is still able to impart wisdom and guidance when He is asked and permitted too. We can no longer afford ourselves to be misinformed and held captive by deceit. We must inspire our youth to admire those who imitate Washington’s shining and noble virtues and whose reverence of God will prove to be a blessing to this country.
Are we now ashamed of the principles which led us along invincible lines of victory, principles for which countless died? It is time to rally and charge in enthusiastic unity for the sake of God and country once again. Faith in God will be our armor. The alternative, silence and apathy, will come at a heavy price. We are at a unique moment in America’s history. We have come face to face with evil. Do we not sense danger?
America grew great by dreaming big and honoring God. Do we have no men and women of big dreams anymore who are willing to fight for them with passion? Are we no longer stirred to believe that America can still be a land where dreams come true? Do our hearts no longer hammer to pay homage to our Creator for the bountiful land and liberties He has gifted us? There is left to us the grand example of God’s faithful servant that we may follow. Stand up and fight. George Washington would have.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2Chronicles 7:14) KJV
