It is hard enough to be a plus-size woman, but those who aren’t need to understand some of the things plus-size women go through.
She looks for the Plus-Size Department but is too embarrassed to ask where to find it. What she should have done is look either for the Junior or Petite Departments. She would find the plus-size clothing right next to them. I’ve never understood the reasoning behind that. Do the powers that be even begin to think how that must make the larger woman feel? One might argue, I guess, where should the Plus-Size Department be placed? Common sense tells me that it should be right next to the Misses Department. At least the difference in size wouldn’t be so obvious between the Misses and the Plus-Size departments.
Okay, so she’s found the Plus-Size Department, which, by the way, is always very limited not only in quantity, but in style. Right next door in the Junior Department are very stylish clothes with a fantastic selection. The Plus-Size woman looks through the rack of clothes in your department while Miss “0” goes from rack to rack in her department.
The clothing world needs to do something to help the larger woman to have the same kind of shopping experience as the slimmer one. The first thing would be to have a better selection in clothes. Just because a woman is large doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to be fashionable. Even today, she is faced with a selection of tent-like tops with no shape to them and elastic-waist pants. Why not offer her some frilly, romantic-looking blouses that cause her to feel like she looks good. She’s realistic enough to know she can’t look like a size “0” if she is a size 3x, but at least she can feel better when she goes out into the world at large (pun intended). There is a variety in every other department, including children, so why not a variety for the plus-size woman? These women want the right to look and feel as good as the next woman.
I believe the fashion world could be looking at a real money maker by adding variety to the Plus-Size Department. The fashion world seems to forget that fashion is not just for the thin woman. Why not duplicate an article of clothing from a junior-size collection or misses-size collection for the Plus-Size Department? I don’t believe there is a woman on the face of the earth who doesn’t want to look nice. I say give them that chance – all of them!
I’ve often wondered who designs clothes for the plus-size woman. Is it Miss “0” and if it is, what can she possibly know about designing clothes for the larger woman? For example, do fashion designers realize that there is very little style around the neck of clothes for the larger woman? Why don’t the fashion makers make more clothing with collars for the plus-size woman? A collar conceals that area around the already large area of the neck and gives it some added interest. The plus-size woman often carries a fat hump at the back of her neck and a collar would balance the front of her neck to the back. The fashion world also needs to be aware that the larger woman looks best in flowing fabrics. Using stiff cotton fabrics cause her to look even larger.
It’s too bad that the larger woman doesn’t get involved in designing clothes for the plus-size woman. She would know exactly what the larger woman needs to look and feel good in this thing we call the fashion world.
I have to admit that the fashion world is becoming a little better, however, not to the extent it needs to be to satisfy all women. A plus-size woman already is extremely self-conscious of her size. To not provide the same style to her as the smaller woman is a slap in the face. The fashion world needs to look into more variety for the larger woman and the cost of her clothes. Don’t punish her for being large! She is already her worst critic – don’t make it any worse for her.
