The house smelled like chocolate chip cookies and bleach. Dishes clanked in the sink and music floated in the air. Mom heard the storm door crash and called for me to take off my shoes, which I promptly kicked into a corner of the entryway. She was wiping her hands on her apron when I came into the kitchen.
“Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!” I thrust my flowers toward her.
Like any mother, she was dutifully thrilled. She gushed, filled a glass of water for my offering, and carefully placed them on the window sill at the sink in the kitchen. Those stinkweeds were there for at least a couple of days.
My own daughter likes to help me in the garden. Every discovery she makes is an absolute thrill for me. She brings me rocks and clods of dirt, over which I exclaim great wonderment. Her two-year-old face lights up with delight at my praise. Will she remember the rocks and clods or will she remember the flowery words I shower upon her? My mother left a trail of happy memories across the path of my heart. It is my ambition to bestow upon my child her legacy.

With 4 kids I've taken home pockets full of rocks my kids have given me on our hiking trips. I too had to act awed and amazed at each rock. They are now in shoe boxes that no one looks at. But the other day my 20 year old daughter told me the hikes I took the kids on when they were small are her greatest memories.
This is one great 'feel good' story! Thanks for sharing it.
