How could we be so cruel?
How could we be such fools?
We slashed His sweet face,
Oh, disgrace, disgrace, disgrace!
Oh, for needle and thread,
To close the gash that is in His head,
Hands pierced by us, too,
Dear Lord, now what can I do?
I watch as He dies,
Tears rampage my eyes,
I’m holding needle and thread,
But my Savior is dead.
The cuts He sustained,
Open wounds, dreadful pain,
I would mend what we tore,
Open cuts, cuts galore.
As I wake from my dream,
And I stare at the seam,
Of the robe I now sew,
The kind He wore long ago.
I can’t sew His feet up,
As I drink from His cup,
For the cuts, holes and tears,
Show how much Jesus cares.
I cannot rescue Jesus,
Stripes He bore, yes, they free us,
I cannot sew them up,
But I can drink from His cup.
