I sat in the middle of the third row of her classroom. Many times, I would try to be invisible to Mrs. Hoffmann. Her brown eyes looked like small black marbles darting around the room. Her voice thundered one moment and then would be squeaky the next. Only Billy Martin could fall asleep in her class. He was not asleep for long before a loud whack would wake him up. She would hit his wooden desk with her ruler. Sometimes he fell under his desk and other times he would sit pin straight turning all white.
Mrs. Hoffmann would always check our lunches. If we had something she wanted, she would ask us if we really wanted it. Of course, any smart child would say no and give it to her. I was so tired of having my candy taken by Mrs. Hoffmann that one morning I packed an extra special treat. That day I handed my lunch to Mrs. Hoffmann with a smile. She asked if I really wanted my ‘treat’ and of course my answer was “no.”
Mrs. Hoffmann was out sick for three days after that day. My ‘treat’ was four squares of a chocolate laxative my mother had in the bathroom cupboard. Mrs. Hoffmann never took anything from our lunches the rest of the year. I wonder if she ever knew it was I who 'treated' her lunch. If she did, she never let me know.

It reminded me of the day my daughter brought her third grade teacher a bouquet of "stinky" flowers. (I think they were Queen Anne's Lace, but they sure didn't smell very appealing!)
