I don’t mind this job, though it’s not really where I thought my calling was. I imagined myself behind a gorgeous antique desk in a fabulous office decorated with all my favorite things. There I would spill one glorious word after another onto paper. Others would read my words and be moved to laughter, tears, and perhaps to even make changes in their lives.
It’s true, scraping mashed peas off the wood floor and blotting out spaghetti sauce from yet another accident-laden blouse hadn’t occurred to me as part of the dream, but this reality is far better. Daily I find myself challenged and stretched to new levels of patience and creativity. I am proud to say because of my work that I am able to multi-task in ways I’d never dreamed possible.
I’ve been told that this is the most important job in the world. Some days I agree with that, most days I forget how important it is. It’s the little things, bringing the spoon to mouth without dropping a morsel, teetering ever so close to falling but capturing the balance and moving forward, forming the sounds between tongue and teeth to both speak and be understood. These are the things for which we gain bragging rights and stickers on a calendar. It’s the big things, learning to share, internalizing Jesus’ love, learning compassion and acting on it. These are the things that change us forever, that help us become useful tools for Christ’s purpose.
So, tomorrow when the alarm goes off at 6:30 or 7:00am, I’ll open my eyes and smile at the happy babbles streaming through the monitor. And once again I’ll go to work and greet my little boss with hugs and kisses. We’ll both spend the day learning and growing, and who knows, maybe I’ll even find a little time to write.
