MOLLY: (entering) Hey, Bubba! Jojo and P.J. are over at the vacant lot and want us to play ball! Come on, let’s go!
(Bubba doesn’t respond.)
MOLLY: What’s the matter, Bubba? You sure look sad! Are you gettin’ sick after eating all those jelly beans this morning? Remember, I told you that eatin’ all the ‘likrish’ ones wasn’t a good idea! I know they’re your fav’rite but…(no response) Oh, I know what’s wrong! I bet your Momma forgot to put your ‘nilla Moonpie in your lunchbox. Is that it? Hey, come on, Bubba, she’ll remember it tomorrow. She knows ‘nilla ones are your fav’rite! Come on, Bubba! Cheer up! Let’s go!
BUBBA: (angry) NO, MOLLY! I’M NOT GOIN’! AND I’M NOT SICK, AND I DON”T CARE ABOUT ANY OLE MOONPIES EITHER!! JUST GO AWAY AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!!
MOLLY: Why, Bubba! You’ve never yelled at me like that before! What’s the matter with you??
(Bubba turns his back on Molly, downcast again, and wipes his eye with his hand.)
MOLLY: Bubba? Are you cryin’? Come on, you can tell me what’s wrong. I’m your friend.
BUBBA: NO! I’m NOT cryin’. Boys don’t CRY!
MOLLY: Oh, that’s silly, Bubba! Everybody cries sometimes. There’s nothin’ wrong with that. What’s got you so upset??
BUBBA: I’m NEVER goin’ to talk to ole ED again!! And I MEAN it!
MOLLY: Ed? Your big brother Ed? What did Ed do??
BUBBA: HE’S JUST A BIG OLE...OLE...OLE PEANUT BUTTER FACE!!!!
MOLLY: Now, come on, Bubba. You know what our Sunday School teacher said. She said that calling people bad names doesn’t make anything better. It just hurts US more. Now, come on, tell me…what did Ed do??
BUBBA: Me an’ Ed USED to be best friends!! We was just like Batman and Robin. Why, he’s rode me on his handle bars ever since I was little…
MOLLY: You mean ‘littler’?
BUBBA: (continuing) … an’ him and me used to go fishin’ and we’d play ball, and he taught me how to whistle---here just listen! Like this! (Bubba whistles, grows quiet again.)
MOLLY: You mean you and Ed don’t do that anymore, Bubba?
BUBBA: Oh, all ole Ed can think about now is COACH STRONG and playing on that ole TEAM!
MOLLY: You mean the ROCKETS? Sure! Ed’s in high school now, and playin’ on the team is one of his fav’rite things to do.
BUBBA: Well, the Rockets ain’t MY FAV’RITE THING!!! I HOPE THEY LOSE EV’RY GAME!!!
MOLLY: Bubba! You don’t mean that! You’re just angry because Ed is spending time with the team instead of with you now. He doesn’t mean to not be with you…it’s just the way it is when brothers get older. He has to be with the team. They have to practice, you know.
BUBBA: WELL, HE DOESN’T HAVE TO LIKE IT SO MUCH!!! ALL HE TALKS ABOUT IS BASEBALL! NOT OUR BASEBALL—THE ROCKETS BASEBALL!!! HE DOESN’T CARE ANYTHING ABOUT ME ANYMORE!!!
MOLLY: Bubba! Get ahold of yourself! Now listen to me! My big brother’s on that team too, and I heard Mom and Dad talkin’ about it meanin’ so much to Jake to be able to see us rootin’ for him in the stands when he’s playin’. Mom said that he played his very best when we were all there. It’s just the same with your brother too! Ed needs you, and here you are feelin’ sorry for yourself!! He’s always been there for you. Now it’s your turn to be there for him!
BUBBA: Gee, Molly, I never thought of it that way before. You think he really does need me? ME???
MOLLY: Well, remember in Sunday School we learned that the Bible says, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”(Luke 6:31 NIV) And teacher says that means we should be nice to other people because we want other people to be nice to us. If you were the big brother and Ed were the little brother wouldn’t you want him in the stands cheering for you?
BUBBA: Yep, I sure would. An’ you know what? I’m goin’ to be there for Ed too!!
MOLLY: That’s the spirit, Bubba! Now, let’s go find Jojo, P.J. and the others. (They start to leave. Then Molly stops.) Hey! Let’s go by the practice field. Maybe Ed’s there. How does that sound?
BUBBA: Yeh! That’s a great idea! (They continue towards offstage, chatting.) And I’ll find out when the next ballgame is,...and then we can... (Their voices trail off as they leave.)
