Until one night after attending a party I wasn’t supposed to. Having lied to my parents about my whereabouts and then fighting with my boyfriend I ended up on twp road 718 alone. Fearful of the punishment I would face I never phoned to ask her to pick me up.

“What’s wrong?”
Slipping out of bed Theresa whispered, “Its Morgan, I’m worried about her.”
“Theresa, you gave Morgan the quarter to phone, right?” James sat up in bed glancing at the bedside table he rubbed his eyes focusing in on the bright red numbers on the alarm clock. “Hon, its only 12:30 her curfew isn’t for another half hour.”
“James, call it mother’s intuition, something’s wrong.”

And so there I was all alone on a dusty back road. Should anything happen I feared I wouldn’t be found for days.
No street lights...
No houses…
No witnesses.
Scaring myself silly I called out to the One I knew would save me from my own stupid mistake. It was a simple prayer. If I remember correctly I said something like this, “Father if you’re there, I mean here, I pray you’ll protect me.”

Switching on the bedroom light Theresa stood in the entrance, tears staining her face, hands clutching the tie to her bathrobe, worry outlining her eyes. “James, I know you don’t believe but please, just this once, will you pray with me?”
“If you think it will help.”

No sooner had I spoken my request into the infinite murkiness I felt them coming up from behind me.
Headlights.
Swiftly I contemplated my choices. I could either slip into the ravine before they saw me or I could continue to confidently walk, head held high, one foot straight in front of the other.

“Father, James and I come to you tonight to ask you to guide and to protect our only child from whatever it is out there that has my soul upset about her welfare. She is only a mere child Father. She is ‘Our’ child. We pray for Your hedge of protection and for Your will. In Your Son’s name ~ Amen.”

The vehicle passed by.
Relief pulsed through my constricted veins.
The car stopped.
My choices mumbled in my mind.
The automobile drove in reverse.
Standing like a deer caught in head lights, eyes blank I willed my legs to move.
I remained frozen.
From the passenger side of the car I heard a women’s voice, “Miss, are you alright?” She paused, “Oh, we thought you were walking alone I see you have a male companion…” Gravel shot up piercing my exposed skin as the vehicle sped off.

“Theresa, what is it? I thought praying would help make you feel better. Why are you crying again?” James wrapped his arms lovingly around his wife.

My human nature was to remain frozen at the thought I was no longer alone. Apparently out of no where a man stood beside me. The woman in the car had seen him causing her to flee.
“This is the way; walk in it.*”
Was I hearing voices?
My right hand felt warm and was gently lifted as if I were holding hands with some one.
But whom?
I couldn’t see who held my hand I could only feel it was being held. Warmth spread over me as calm settled my frightened soul.

Wiping fresh tears away Theresa managed to say everything would be all right, she could feel her spirit soften.
The front door opened. I walked in singing ‘just a closer walk with thee.' Mom asked if I was okay but before I could answer she filled me in on her events of the last half hour. When I was finally able to speak I excitedly told both mom and dad how Jesus appeared by my side as the stranger asked if I was okay and how the women said she saw I had a male companion. Then He walked me safely home.
Mom totally believed me. Dad didn’t. Not until I showed him a picture of the couple who had stopped me the night before. They were in the newspaper the next day. The headline read, “Couple Child Molesters Caught in Sting Op down Twp Road 718.”
