“Hi. Gramma. I was just about to knock when you opened the door. Were you headed out? I can come back.”
“No Baby, I was just going to check the mail. Come on in and sit. Let me fix you a glass of my special tea.” As gramma went to work on the tea, Tracy sat in silence looking at her hands, her thumbs circling slow, then fast, then slow again.
Gramma set a saucer in front of her with a cup of tea and two peanut butter cookies.
Tracy stirred her tea and gazed into it as though the answer would float to the surface.
“Tracy, why don’t you tell me why you’re here, I know its not for tea.”
“I just thought I’d stop by.”
“Baby, you’re forgetting who you’re talking to.
“Okay, Gramma. I have a huge decision to make, and I’m just having a hard time. The answer seems so obvious, but how can I know for sure?”
“You know me, baby. I go to the Bible. It is our life’s guidebook.”
“Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth” they chimed together.
“There’s a smile. I knew there had to be one somewhere.” Gramma placed one hand over Tracy’s and flipped through her Bible with the other. She pulled her chair over close to Tracy’s and turned her Bible so that it faced them.
Tracy’s eyes were drawn to John 11:35, it was highlighted in bright yellow. “Jesus wept. That’s the shortest verse in the Bible. I think that was the verse everyone in the youth group could quote.” Tracy smiled at the memory.
“Have you ever really thought about that verse Tracy? Jesus wept. It is the shortest verse, but it holds so much meaning. Why would Jesus have cried? He is omniscient. He knew what he had the power to do. Yet, he cried. That must have been a hard decision for Him to make. No doubt He struggled with the thought of bringing someone back into this world of sin; especially when he knew that it wouldn’t have been long until they could have been together for ever. He loved Lazarus. He loved Lazarus’ sisters. They had all been good friends to Him. He knew the grief those sisters were feeling, and I’m sure He was grieved over losing a friend, too. He also knew the grief that we all have in this life, yet He brought him back. Sometimes, we too, are faced with decisions that seem too big for us to make. That’s when we have to give them over to God. Close your eyes, baby.”
Tracy closed her eyes. She felt her gramma’s arm drape over her shoulder. She heard the Bible slide off the table and she knew gramma had it held close to her heart. The tears that she had held in check now fell shamelessly as she heard her gramma pray. Tracy prayed from her heart also, knowing all along that God had been nudging her heart in the right direction, but she finally acknowledged His answer. She wiped her eyes and blew her nose, then turned to her Gramma for a hug. “Thanks Gramma. You always know how to make me feel better.”
“It’s the Lord, baby. You go on home now and pray about that decision.”
Most of the walk home was spent in thanksgiving prayer. She was so happy to know for sure what she had to do.
Back at home, she went to the phone and dialed the number from the card she held in her hand.
“Northside Clinic” came the answer from the line.
“Yes ma’am, my name is Tracy Daniels. I have an appointment scheduled for this Thursday, and I’d like to cancel it.”
“Tracy Daniels. Yes, I see that you have an appointment with Dr. Damien. Are you sure that you want to cancel?”
“Yes ma’am. I’ve changed my mind about the procedure.”
“I must tell you Tracy, it is better to do this early in the pregnancy if it all possible. Would you like to speak with a counselor?”
“No Ma’am. I’ve made my decision. I choose life.”
