It was a Monday morning when Lee had met her Auntie Sharon for their usual breakfast of medium poached eggs, tomato slices and coffee. They just happened to be sitting one table over from the staff table and I was able to hear their conversation word for word.
It went something like this…
“What do you mean you quit your job?”
Looking her aunt straight in the eye Lee repeated her statement.
Worry lines crept into the corners of Sharon’s eyes, “But you’re barely making ends meet now.”
“And I was miserable doing it.” Lee flew her hands up in the air.
“Well what are your plans now? Will you go back to college? Maybe become a lawyer?”
Smiling proudly Lee stated matter-of-factly, “I’m going to write the next all time great American best seller!”
I almost spit my own mouth full of coffee on my boss who was sitting across from me when I heard not only what Lee had done but what she wanted to do. Not wanting the ladies to know I was listening in I asked my boss a mindless question about the weather. She answered and I went back to my ease dropping. I had to hear why Lee decided to follow her dreams.
“Oh Lee, are you serious or are you pulling my leg? I didn’t know you wanted to be an author or that you even liked to write for that matter. You do know what the likelihood of your dreams coming to true is, don’t you?”
Still smiling Lee replied with a joyous, “Yep!”
Taking a sip of her hot black coffee Sharon thought a moment before she made her own statement. “I can’t believe you’re doing this. No one in our family has ever given up their career for their dreams. Everyone works for the all mighty dollar.”
“Well I guess I’ll be the first. Ya all can think Brad and I are crazy but remember how happy we are.”
“May I ask whose idea this was?”
“Sure.” Lee gulped down the last of her water and then continued. “The other night after work I sat there complaining about everything into the wee hours of the morning until Brad asked me what would make me happy. I confided in him about my dream and that’s when he encouraged me to try and fulfill it. I fill like the wealthiest woman in the entire world.”
“Lee I hate to break this to you but you will be far from wealthy for a very long time.”
“Only if you think of wealth in the way of money. I think of wealth in the way of living ones dreams.”
Almost as if in a daze and not really listening to Lee, Sharon stated, “You know I think I read somewhere the author of Harry Potter was almost homeless before she was able to sell her manuscripts. I sure hope that doesn’t happen to you.”
“Auntie Sharon, did you hear me? I told you I am already the wealthiest women in the world. My husband is encouraging me to live out my dreams and you can’t put a price on that. I don’t think our Heavenly Father would’ve given me the passion and the open door if He did not want me to pursue it. And I believe in His timing great things will happen with my writing.”
Try as she did Lee wasn’t able to get her point across to her aunt. She did however reach my soul that morning and before she left I went up to her and asked her if she would consider being my writing buddy. You know just like a walking buddy? She agreed. That was six months ago, neither one of us has been published yet but I’ve already written three children’s books and she’s completely finished her first draft. Lee and I are both succeeding, one step at a time. We are not living to achieve prosperity through the all mighty dollar. We are living our dreams and that wealth is priceless.
