I hear, see and sense your presence, though your body dodges me. It was you Pallid Face that I said “good morning” to thinking it my son. So sure I heard my son say “good morning mum” I responded and awaited the morning kiss that always followed. But kiss not arriving, I knew the voice would not reveal body. Checking my son’s room, I found him still asleep, then I knew that you were indeed becoming brave. Another time the gentle gliding of the air behind me spoke of you, and I turned to catch a glimpse of your gray silhouette. While sitting and reading, I witnessed the calm sinking cushion next to me as you drew near again. By then accustomed to you and sensing neither threat nor fear, I had resigned myself to your visits. But then my cousin brought some troubling news which revealed that your innocence may be of deceptive motives.
“You can’t be serious, an educated girl like you believing such a thing as a generational curse” was my response to Jacqueline’s revelation. Jacqueline lashed back, “Look at the family’s common sufferings and compare my father’s, your aunt’s, your mother’s, our grandmother’s, and now even You, Cuz, spanning three generations that we know of.” From someplace within my soul Truth by Faith leapt over the hurdle of defense by reasoning. Truth showed me our common symptoms of self imprisonment, the absence of laughter, the hallowing of a darkness where light is forbidden, and the ever threatening descent into the abyss of madness.
I didn’t tell Jacqueline that she was a messenger with news that linked to my visitor for I intended to confront Pallid Face with this knowledge. Was he innocent, had he attempted and failed all these years to plead his case with a member of his own family? I wondered, had he been dismissed before by some, as just conjured images of their imaginations? Or were they some who knew him to be, but was too ashamed to speak of him for fear of being accused of insanity? Were some like my mother who saw and thought him just a friendly presence? Maybe I am now the one chosen to invite dialogue, to break the curse on our family and to set Pallid Face on the path of hope, peace, rest and freedom.
I will extend Pallid Face forgiveness for I too pray each day “forgive us from our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.” That he does not threaten, and always seem to move with caution, and having never heard a bad report I want to believe that it’s forgiveness he seeks. Guilty he must have been of some heinous crime, but like us today, may have failed to consider his bequeathing on generations to come.
“My advise to you Pallid Face is to throw yourself at the feet of the Lord, confessing and beseeching his mercy. You see your help and escape lie not with me but with He who is the Way, Truth and Life. But I do believe that you needed one from this side, one of your bloodline to extend forgiveness on behalf of all.”
If He were to ask me I shall tell Him that I have extended mercy for he taught me to love and pray for my enemies. Seeking to please him and to free myself and family I release Pallid Face from the gravity of his injuries.
“Go now to the Son of God who is the only Power that can set free. I do this all to help you Pallid Face for truth to tell, though afflicted by your curse we have been set free. For though we manifest the symptoms, a Room has been prepared in a Holy Palace where symptoms of this world do not prevail. We have been assured of this freedom from the very place of which you now seek deliverance.”
