Topic: Help (02/20/06)
“Mommy, please help me,” Bethany said as she came out of her room with her shirt in her hand.

I helped her put on her shirt and she gave me a hug.

“Thank You, Mommy,” she said.

“Mommy, I can’t figure out this math problem,” Jeffrey said as he tapped his pencil on the desk.

I looked over at his paper and explained how to do the problem again. He did it and smiled at me.

“Thanks Mommy,” he said.

“Mom, I can’t figure out what to write about,” Kayla said as she chewed on her pencil.

I gave her a few ideas, and she started to write. I smiled as she proudly read her story to me.

“Mommy, help me tie my shoe,” Jeffrey said.

“Mommy, help me with my math,” Kayla said.

“Mommy, help me spell this word,” Bethany said.

Their constant cries for help wore me down, and by the end of the day I didn’t care if I heard another cry for help again. I sat down in my chair and rubbed my forehead. The headache that had started earlier was still pounding. I looked around at the baskets of unfolded laundry in the living room and the unwashed dishes in the sink. I was too tired to deal with them.

“Who is going to help me?” I wondered.

Then I looked at my Bible sitting on my desk, and I smiled. God would help me. He had helped me every time I came to him. He never got tired of my asking. He never tired of my constant cries for help. He was always there to guide me and help me be the best mom, homemaker, and teacher I could be.

I went into the kid’s rooms and looked at them asleep in their beds. Tears came to my eyes as I thought about how big they were getting. Pretty soon, they would not need me to help them put on a shirt, or tie a shoe, or write a story. They would not need mommy anymore to wipe away a tear or hug them when they got hurt. The thought made me sad, but at the same time I was happy, because I will have done the job that God wanted me to do. I breathed a prayer of thankfulness for my children and smiled as I knew that because of God’s help, I could help them grow, learn, and live for God.

It is true that we sometimes become weary. A very practical thought. Whenever I tend to become like that, I remember Ecclesiastes 9:10; Philippians 4:13. Good writing.

This brought tears to my eyes as it reminded me how fast my own children have grown. As parents, we need to see each moment as precious, and do what we can with the time that we have. Good story.

I agree with Marie and all of the others. This was wonderful. I am going through a time of being sad, because my 3 are ages 12, 16 and 19, growing up too fast. Thank you very much for your writing.

Very nice. I could so relate. I've often wondered "who helps the helper?" - and come to the same conclusions.
