I walked through the clammy weeds as the darkness descended upon me, with my Irish setter friend at my side. Our path took us toward the sand-shorn cliffs, while catching glimpses of the sun beyond.
The vivid purples, scarlet, and pinks drew me to the sphere glowing on the waves. The sun was setting, and soon darkness would touch the bay below, like space itself was coming down to meet it.
I had been there, sitting at the edge of the cliff, many times. My toes curled around the sandy edge as the waters crashed below. The sound was deafening, yet familiar. As if it were voicing its new arrival upon the rock-splotched shore.
We sat atop the hardened cliffs, Tillicum, with his setter’s head upon my lap, sitting and waiting in turn, as the vibrant sphere trembled to the sea. Our place atop the cliff was touched by the darkness, of infinite space from the Heavens above, while the stars took over the sky and lit our pathway, guiding us home.
