Argon understood her brothers sentiments. She had logged her first flight one month after completion of space flight simulation training. Meanwhile, two years after his completion, Tom was still processing flight plans at Vacation Space Portal. “Your time will come too, Tom.” Argon leaned closer. “Be careful to show your true emotions though brother. You know the dragon comes down very hard on men who show signs of aggression.” Argon let her eyes follow the room. “She brought a sense of safety to our planet after the MCSN of 2069.”
Tom leaned in toward his younger sister. “Yes she did. But we know it is a lie.” His voice hissed. “The time is at hand little sister. The sun shines no more. The moon gives no light. Stars have fallen to the earth devastating most of it. Now we are always in a state of darkness with a band of space dust that surrounds our planet.” His eyes narrowed. “She would see us all die.”
Her voice became urgent. “Stop.” Bowing her head she continued quietly. “People may be listening. You will get your chance to see the stars. To search for the light. Dark matter may take up 95 % of all matter in existence today.” She glanced at the entrance of an officer to the cyber cafe. “But the light will come. Pray in your secret place. Believe. Few do anymore, Tom. Believe.”
He heard the passion in his sisters voice. Saw the pleading look in her eyes. “I have not lost my faith little sister. The light will come and the dark matter will be cast away.” His hand gripped the bubbling glass in front of him. “Two more from the group were killed this morning. They were over heard in their private chamber!”
Argon tried not to show her anguish. “Not Clancy and James! They have been posting the word with more bravado than usual. I applaud their passion but they risk much to us all.”
“No.” Tom held his silence for a moment. “ Hope and Charity.”
Argon froze. They were her closest friends. Her only other confidants, Conformers in Christ, other than her brother. You could trust no one anymore. Even parents turned in their own children. Their number was getting smaller every day. “I will miss them.” Silence. “I will see them again.”
Tom reached his hand across the small table. “I heard two more men have been found in the wilderness.” He squeezed her hand gently. “They are going through the decontamination process now. After 3 days they will be released.”
She nodded slowly. “There is only one reason they would have stayed in the wilderness. I pray they keep quiet until we can reach them. There is hope.” She lifted eyes to Tom. “I heard they are sending the next mission to our sister galaxy. They believe there is a habitable planet there.”
“I know. I should be the one chosen for this mission. Space is going to be my chance to get away from the trials of this planet.”
“We will all have trials, Tom. You can not escape that in space.” She felt a moment of loneliness as his hand left hers. “The time is here, Tom. whether you are on earth or in space or on another planet. Nothing will stop what is going to happen.”
He sighed heavily. “I know. Really I do. I just want to get out. Just for awhile. I want to see the stars.” His head turned to follow the increased murmurings.
Someone shouted. “They are about to post the crew now!”
The plasma screen on the back wall showed the all too perfect image of the dragon. She was smiling serenely out at everyone. It gave Tom chills. Names began to scroll across the bottom of the screen. “There it is! You're going this time! You are finally going to see the stars, Tom!” Argon flung her arms around her brothers neck and murmured against his skin. “You are going into space.”
