You briskly walk right into the area eager to see what they may be looking at. And you find them looking at pictures on a colleague’s phone. You see your colleague scrolling as different pictures appear, some of which were taken by a third person and most of which were selfies. You find yourself joining in the excitement as you hear the comments made by the other colleagues on how beautiful the pictures are but mostly importantly how generous you and your friend are. Pictures of two friends handing out snacks and teddies to deprived little children were pretty cool. Hugging the kids and having them take selfies with you to show their excitement was cute. You find your head getting quite swollen until a notification appears on the phone which will not get off even when the option of ‘cancel’ is selected. With frustration, an “ok” is selected and then everything begins to turn sour.
With no explanation to what was really happening, a back drop of you and your friend’s actions, thoughts and words in the past days and weeks begin to play. An hour before that selfie, you had expressed your disgust about how unclean some of the kids looked and decided not to take any pictures with them. However, your friend who also felt the same way encouraged you to take them because it would make you guys look good when posted online. Your desire to come along with the youth group was actually motivated by your envious thoughts about a girl at church. She always had the praises and if she was going to come you would do same. Your friend had an entirely different motive, anything that would make her look “christiany” just to make her feel good about herself was always great. The live of lies, anger and envy were being played out for you all to see. She had lied about bringing out the idea for a project some days back when it was another colleague in the office. She harboured bitterness against her parents for asking her to put on more decent clothes. You on the other hand were not guilty of that since, there you were hearing your thoughts being played out about how you only dressed to attract the opposite sex.
All the lies you had told about your friends, the jealous thoughts you had about them including your colleagues, how you gossiped about them to each other, criticized and insulted people who cared enough to correct you were all being shown. All the lustful thoughts your friend had, how selfish and inconsiderate she was, all the hateful words she spoke and the ungodly deeds you both engaged in in the past weeks were being shown as everyone present looked on.
There was more to know and see beyond that selfie. That godly act was just a flash in a moment and that mysterious app had revealed the true you. Imagine yourself standing there with your colleagues staring at you with a surprised and angry look, while you stare back at your friend surprised at who she really was. You just wished there was some other app that would cause you to vanish with a click.
You walk back wondering why God would allow that to happen to you, forgetting that HE had nothing to do with it. Everything that played out was reality, that picture wasn’t. The click-snap-flash-selfie world redefined what reality was and deceived you. Beyond every flash is a video played out before God.
