Exhausted and on the verge of collapse Prince George had almost reached the “Top of the World,” that is what the Zenithians, called it any way; Mt. Ntenna Left was one of the two highest points in their world. Only a handful of Zenithians had ever dared climb the sheer, silver cliffs to the “Top of the World”; only a few had been successful. Prince George could see the peak shimmer in the disappearing light of the day, it was not far ahead, but his legs had all but given out on him. George sat down for a moment to catch his breath; his will to continue escaped with each painful breath, but the prince, the handsome and brave Captain of the Royal Scouts and the husband of his beloved Queen Anna remembered why he had volunteered for this very important mission; the fate of his world, his people could be dependant on the intelligence he gathered at the “Top of the World.”
Royal Scouts stationed on the fringe of the Zenithian world had reported hearing strange sounds, perhaps even the voices of the gods, coming from the Great Unknown. These sounds raised flags in the royal palace, only once before in Zenithan history had the voices of the gods ever been heard so closely and that was just before the Move. Every Zenithian household told their own stories of that day. On the day of the Move the thunderous voices of the gods rumbled across the sky from beyond the Great Unknown. The deafening sounds shook every inch of the Zenithian world; from the “Top of the World,” to the Transistor Forest. The Move is the day when the patriarch of the gods, Jack Calhoun, could be heard saying, “Move that old Zenith to the attic.” Joshua Calhoun and Jeremy Calhoun the sons of Jack then physically picked up the entire world of Zenith and moved it to its current location.
Prince George topped the left peak of Mt. Ntenna and quickly set up his equipment. The view was incredible; it was nothing like George had ever seen. High above him and to the right was Zenith’s source of light and heat, but instead of only one beam of light, as thought by the academics of Zenith, there were five, slotted beams of light, but only one that shown on Zenith. Mountains of various shapes and peaks three times higher than Mt Ntenna surrounded the Zenithian world; two in particular were so close George guessed that he could reach out and touch them. Prince George was not here to admire the Great Unknown, however, it was the strange sounds he was investigating.
Suddenly in the distance, from the other side of one of the oddly shaped mountains George heard faint sounds; maybe the voices of the gods; he could not be sure. He raised his antennae and stood up high on his back legs and listened very hard. “Aaargghh” was it a voice of the gods or something else?
George could not make clearly make out the sound. He took a deep breath to try and calm his heartbeat that nervously raced in his chest and concealed the indistinct sounds. “C’mon George focus,” he thought to himself as he sat down momentarily to relax. He focused on all the years of his training; slowly he raised his body as high as he could and pointed his antennae in the direction of the sounds.
“Let’s go Jeremy,” the name of one of the sons of the god Jack Calhoun, “find the cat and lets get out of here.”
“Find the cat?” George was puzzled, “What is a cat?” George focused and listened again. He peered out past the mountains towards the voices of the gods. Suddenly something moved on top of the third mountain. It was something that he had never seen before. It moved so it must have been alive; George thought that maybe it was another god, “Was that the cat?” he thought as it creature came to rest on top of the third mountain.
Suddenly as the creature leaped a giant hand, the hand of one of the gods, grabbed it. “Gotcha!” exclaimed the voice. Ever so briefly George got his first glimpse of one of the gods. He fell backwards at the sight. “Bad Buttons! I got her Joshua lets get out of here.”
Prince George breathed in relief as the sounds disappeared as suddenly as they had appeared. His beloved Zenith was safe once again.
