" Sure, Darling. I'll be back shortly!"
Is there something serious about the fainting that I needed to go back? I was traveling on the subway to give private lesson to a foreign student. It was 1 December 2014.
Trembling all over her body; she did not open her eyes to look at me. I still remember the things she told my two girls.
" Don't quarrel or fight. You must listen to your Daddy!"
My heart sank as I tried to process her message. It sounded like giving her last word.
"Don't forget to return the dog to the neighbor."
We knew that was typical of her but still did not have any clue about her conditions.
Based on both spoken and body language I sensed something seriously wrong with her.
"Has the ambulance arrived? " she asked.
" Not yet but let me phone them again" my older girl responded.
Reckoned that this was not just an ordinary loss of consciousness, my heart leapt even faster and I dreaded something worse.
She had actually made two calls. In retrospect, I am thankful for these two calls. One for me to accompany her to the hospital, another for saving her life. About forty-five minutes, the ambulance arrived and decided to race her to hospital.
I was waiting outside the emergency room for the doctor to contact me. I started to recall all the things that happened that very night, especially her painfully shocking request on the way to the hospital.
“ Should I need the wheelchair, please ask the doc to give me an injection.”
“ O, no. You can’t do that!’ the paramedic responded.
It broke my heart to hear such request. What happens to our marriage vow—“…for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. I will love…” Suddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by a surgeon.
After almost two hours, I was standing before the surgeon, filled with trepidation.
"This is called the rupture of an aneurysm. The main artery in her neck ballooned and burst, causing blood clots in her brain. We need to operate on her brain to save her"
I nodded calmly but my heart felt the tremor. He scanned my face carefully but he
could not see me weeping inside along with this explanation.
“30% of the patients died in the operation; 30% would suffer mental deficit, and 30% would turn vegetative for life!” the surgeon explained to me in a clinically-cold manner before I consented to the operation.
My heart almost hit rock-bottom but faith got the better of me, and I struggled to anchor to it, for her return to normal life.
To fast forward, by the grace of God she has recovered surprisingly well; except for her right foot that tends to tiptoe and she is yet to regain her bowels control.
Recently, a colleague confided to me that her sister-in-law woke up from her fainting and went about shopping for grocery. She then lost her consciousness but never regained it.
The wisdom to call the hospital has always remained as a mystery to me. What had prompted her to make that critical call? Like Job, I do not have any inkling about the purpose of Luanne’s suffering, but I know my God works in mysterious ways.
