I used this commercial once when speaking to a youth group in our church. “Now, don’t go home and tell your parents that I suggested drinking beer,” I said. “But remember, the commercial says to me that we who believe in God are secure and nothing can ruffle us.” They enjoyed my analogy but also got my message.
The commercial pointed out something else. Many waves of fear will come against us in this fallen world. Like ocean waves, they keep coming. I remember being in Kindergarten during World War II. There was a possibility that German bombers could reach the United States. I lived in a city where American bombers were made. Thus we were a prime target for the enemy. There was a time in the war that it looked like we were going to lose. But the United States called upward to God’s purpose and goodness prevailed over evil. Many people thought peace would be permanent throughout the world.
World peace wasn’t to be had, however. The Soviet Union took up the evil mantle to rule the world. The United States stockpiled nuclear weapons of equal size and the resultant standoff was labeled the Cold War. Everyone knew that if World War III were to erupt the destruction would be beyond everyone’s imagination. But with perseverance of believers’ prayers and the actions of a brave President, the Cold War ended.
The end of the Cold Warm, however, did not bring peace on earth because wars still persist. The latest war is driven by an ideological mindset in which Christians and Jews are regarded as being followers of the Great Satan. Those that take up this mindset consider themselves to be the good guys and the bad guys must be eradicated from the face of the earth. No methods to accomplish this purpose are off limits. Such a war strikes fear in everyone.
The people in the Middle East that are unfortunate enough to be uprooted by terrorists probably cry out to God. I believe that this plea exists in every person when faced with impossible situations. Will the entire world have to endure savagery that disrupts life? We don’t know. In any event our only hope for all of us is to dwell with God. He is a mighty fortress to those who trust in Him. We have a strong source of assurance in response to this planned execution of Christians, Jews and those who sympathize with the cause of goodness. Psalm 91:1-2 was written, for times such as these, by men of old who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
