I stand on the hillside. The setting sun casts long dark shadows in front of me. I look searchingly toward the horizon. My eyes are focused; my heart sober; my spirit alert. Thick threatening clouds gather in the east. I feel the earth tremble beneath my feet from the approaching storm. The waters are stirring and the air is in a state of unease. Creation begins to groan.
Movement in the valley captures my attention. The clouds swirl and thicken as hoards who have turned away from the light create tumult and destruction under the canopy of the night.
Bands of lawlessness begin to form and gather together with swords, bows, spears, and other weapons of the dark.
Evil masses, organizing under their prince, the prince of darkness. Arrows of fear are shot out ahead of the battle. Finding their target they cause paralysis, cowering, and retreat.
I close my eyes and breath in deeply. I lift my hand and place it in the One whom I stand next to. He is known as the Captain of the Hosts, Prince of Peace, King of Kings and more. I call him Abba. Father. I feel the warmth and strength of his encompassing hand
tighten around mine. I am not afraid. I bow my head.
He is my shelter in the storm.
He covers me with his wings.
He has established His kingdom and it cannot be shaken.
He has conquered sin and death.
I am not afraid.
As evening quickly draws near, a picture fills my mind. It is a warm summer night and a gentle breeze is blowing kisses to us. We run with abandonment in our bare feet, chasing the elusive firefly. We are not frightened to be out, as our father is with us and he applauds our catches then encourages us to release them. We are happy. We are safe. We do not fear the dark.
I do not fear the dark. I lift my gaze to Jesus. He looks down and smiles at me. I am not afraid.
