The encounter happened quite suddenly. Or so it seemed. However, the seeds for this encounter had been planted for a long time. Year after year, Don’s beliefs and actions paved the way for the painful end.
The encounter would ultimately change Don’s way of thinking and his way of life. He would learn to see in a way he hadn’t seen before. He would see that these people he was supposedly pleasing really could not be pleased. It didn’t seem to matter that he had lent a helping hand and been like a “savior” to them. Nor did it seem to matter that he had sacrificed so much and often at the expense of his own needs. He was the only one who ever cared about these people! That he knew for sure.
The encounter seemed harmless enough but little did Don know that it would cost him everything. Everything that was of his “people pleasing” nature that is.
The man looked like everyone else that needed help that day. But this time it was different. Unfortunately, Don chose to help the wrong person. A real “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” For this man wasn’t at all who he said he was. He approached Don like all the rest. He was real scruffy and let on that he had come from far away. Oh, but little did Don know, he really hadn’t.
Don gave of himself the way he always did. Made sure the man had all the meal cards and a nice motel room for the night. He even paid extra so he could have cable TV and have something to enjoy in his miserable life. Yes, Don gave of himself for this man. It felt good, as after all, he was the only one who really cared. This man didn’t realize how blessed he was to have encountered Don. Who knows what may have become of him!
Then came the ultimate betrayal. This man wasn’t at all who he said he was. The wolf came out as Don gave him his last dollar before heading out the door. That’s when he heard what sounded like a car backfiring and felt the warmth on his shoulder. Oh the excruciating pain! He had been shot!
Don collapsed before he could reach the exit. In a daze, he saw the man looking for more money and anything he could get his hands on. Little did he know that Don had already given him everything he had.
Too weak from the loss of blood to overtake him, he waited until this wolf was done with his prey before he even stirred. This man wasn’t fooling around. If he valued his life, he would lay as still as possible until he was done.
Finally he ran out the door and disappeared. And Don’s people pleasing ways disappeared along with him. That was enough. No more would he act as savior to these people. No more “lone ranger” ways for him.
Managing to pull himself up, he called 911. He didn’t have a long stay in the hospital, but it was long enough to change his ways. From now on, Don would point these people to the real Savior so they could be dependent on Him. Not that he wouldn’t help anyone anymore. Didn’t the Savior say, “The poor would be with us always?” Yes, with us. All of us. Yet the load was never meant for one person. The poor, like everyone else, need a Savior to depend upon and His name is not Don.
The encounter turned out to be the best thing that happened to Don, despite the pain he had to go through to learn this lesson. He needed to see that he was only one man who could not be all things to all people. That day his eyes were opened and Don saw himself as the mere man he really is.

I saw some repetitive phrases and think it might be best to try to find different ways to say the same thing.
