I found myself thinking, why Beyonce? There is no doubt that she is a talented gifted woman, but a role model for my God fearing Christian daughter, no way! I could not believe what I was hearing.
“What makes her someone you would look up to and take advice from?” I replied diplomatically. At least it’s not Lady Gaga that my child was looking to for advice, I sighed with relief. “Ma she is hot and beautiful. Beyonce is successful and has everything she wants. She has a perfect life” Zubeida proclaimed. It saddened me to hear my beautiful girl speak these words with so much conviction. “I want to be just like her,” she added. I really would have liked her to say “Jesus is my role model.”
Zubee as we lovingly call her, is my foster daughter. She adopted me as her mom when she was only ten years old. Now at the age of sixteen she is a beautiful young woman whose biological parents both died in the same year. Her family have abandoned her and take no responsibility for her whereabouts, upbringing or education. Zubee, I sensed was having an identity crisis.
The world of a young teenage girl is all about bling, fashion trends and being hot. Pop stars dictate to them what is in and what is out of fashion. Even being brought up in a chrsitian environment does not protect our children, from the wolves out there portraying a certain image. They make millions at the expensive of our teens. As parents we cannot protect them forever. We need to teach our children to overcome and to realise that the world has nothing to offer in the long run.
I thought about how I was going to help my daughter with something she did not perceive an issue. She was searching for identity in a world where being a Christian was difficult and compromise was very easy for a young believer. Even at Youth you had to wear the right clothes and have the right phone, or you were not part of the sizzle of the moment.
“Sweetheart, it’s not only important what you look like on the outside or whether you famous or not.” I began explaining to her as she listened intently. I had her attention and we spoke for almost an hour. It was a great time of love and stronger bonding as I told Zubee that she was beautiful and unique even though she was not famous. I ended by saying “Make Jesus famous and you will shine. Sizzle for Him my love.”
