As they went the disciples excitedly discussed what they had just heard. Jesus would be going back to heaven so that they could be baptised in the Holy Spirit, who would not only be with them but in them.
Peter asked, “How could that be? How could our bodies become the dwelling place of God?”
John responded, “If Jesus said it, then it surely will happen.”
Andrew reminded them, “It was John the Baptist who first mentioned the possibility of Jesus baptising with the Holy Ghost.”
“Yes and do you remember at the feast of booths,” John added, “Jesus said if anyone was thirsty they should come to him and drink so that out of their inner being there would flow rivers of living water? He was speaking of the Spirit there as well.”
This was something very new. The prophets had been moved by the Spirit to prophesy but only on special occasions. From now on every believer could be filled with the Holy Spirit.
With these things occupying their minds no one noticed that Jesus was very quiet. As they walked the inner turmoil that Jesus felt was increasing. This one who loved righteousness and hated evil; who had been tempted in every point just as others yet was still without sin; now found himself overwhelmed as the sins of the whole world were being laid to his charge. Jesus was not afraid of the death and suffering that he was about to face. This was the reason he had come. But now sin, which was totally foreign to him was saturating his very being.
When they reached the garden, Jesus took Peter James and John a little way from the others saying, “Tonight I am so stressed that I feel I could die. Watch and pray that you will not be tested. Your spirits indeed are willing but the flesh is weak.”
He was not long gone when they fell asleep
Having said this, he went about as far as you could throw a stone further and fell on his knees and began to pray to the Father, “This cup of trembling seems too much for me and I fear that I will die too soon. If it is possible take this cup from me. Yet your will must be done not mine.” (1.)
Being human he offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared. (2.) An angel was sent from heaven to strengthen him.
Praying even more intently Jesus began to sweat and from his forehead there dripped great drops of blood. (3.) As His blood dripped to the ground he prayed on until peace re-entered his soul. He rose victorious even in this battle with the sins of the world. Now he was ready to go and lay down his life a sacrifice for the whole world past, present and future. He knew that no man could take his life from him but he would willingly lay it down so that whoever would believe in him would not perish but have eternal life. (4.)
Although the wages of sin is death, for those who believe, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (5.)
At this point his betrayer came and Jesus went with them to be judged by the Sanhedrin and to give his life a ransom for all.
