In the far corner of our automotive shop is an old faucet in which we attach a garden hose for washing cars or washing the floor of the shop. When we take the hose off, it also supplies us with clean drinking water and water for making coffee. Trouble is, you have to turn it real tight or it starts to drip.
If you can, imagine the noises of a mechanic at work using air tools, pounding with a hammer, dropping wrenches and making many other sounds; not to mention the air compressor running from time to time and the car hoist clanging as it goes up or down. Yet amongst all this noise, my husband can here the drip, drip, drip of this faucet. He says he just can’t stand that noise! I, on the other hand, just ignore it or block it from my attention.
It’s the little things in life that can irritate us to the point that we “just can’t stand it”. For example, there is the gal who always comes late and disrupts the service, the mother who doesn’t control her kids, and the lady who always sings too loud.
I think Satan comes with his irritation tactics and drops subtle hints in our ears. If Sue would only keep her children quiet, you could concentrate on the sermon! If Betty would just tone her voice down a little, you could get into the worship a whole lot more!
The enemy will do everything he can to prevent us from hearing from God.
Those little irritations become louder and louder, if we let them, to the point where we can’t hear a word the Lord is saying.
Listen to the voices around you. God is speaking loud and clear if we will open our ears to hear. He’s saying, “Sue could use a helping hand teaching her children and maybe someone to give her a break once in a while. Will you help her? Betty would love to join the choir but is afraid to ask. Will you ask her? The gal in the corner comes here every week hoping to make a friend. Will you be her friend?” Are we too busy listening to the drip, drip, drip of irritation to hear the loud cries for help all around us?
If we let those little irritations from others get to us, it will hinder our love walk with those people and with God.
James 4:7(KJV) says, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you”! Resist or ignore those little irritations and hear God speaking!
